McCain now trails Obama by 2.7 points, down from the 3.9 point deficit he faced 24 hours earlier.

Seven-point-one percent of the likely voters surveyed said they remain undecided.

Obama lost five-tenths of a point from yesterday's report, while McCain gained another six-tenths of a point. It was the third consecutive day in which Obama's numbers slipped and McCain's numbers increased.

McCain has once again moved above 45% support overall, a mark he has not seen since the second day of daily tracking reports. Obama's slip under 48% support is the first time at that level in nearly a week. He now stands within one-tenth of a percent of where he stood when the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby daily tracking began almost two weeks ago. McCain is within two-tenths of a percent of where he was when the tracking poll began.

He closes in more than a point in 24 hours? That sounds big - not that I am watching the polls. :)

Is this today’s or yesterday’s? I thought I read somewhere here(middle of the night) that Monday’s Zogby showed a big move to Obama 49-43?

Powell bounce?

Survey manipulation (weighting) to suppress the vote for one side, and encourage it for another.

While a national poll gives some idea of the sentiment of the “nation-as-a-whole” it is not the electoral, state-by-state answer that actually determines the election.

When a national poll is within the margin of error, it automatically should send the message that this defaults to the electoral college.

In that a national poll’s attempts to balance its random sample by state, any numbers from a huge state that is o overwhelmingly in one camp or the other will skew the poll in favor of their candidate. This is the case with Calif and New York. The odds of finding a conservative democrat in those states is remote. The odds of finding a liberal republican are great. Their size means they get a lot more representation in the poll than do other states.
