And with this, JTP has officially been name-checked by all four candidates today. The way the video’s cut, picking up mid-sentence, it sounds like Obama’s sneering at Wurzelbacher for being a plumber — “A plumber is the guy he’s fighting for” — to the great amusement of the crowd. The full quote:
“He’s trying to suggest that a plumber is the guy he’s fighting for,” Obama said. “How many plumbers you know that are making a quarter-million dollars a year?” Obama said McCain was misleading voters by proposing tax plans that favor the rich while criticizing an Obama tax plan that would raise taxes only on people making more than $250,000 a year, just 5 percent of all taxpayers.
They’re laughing at McCain for claiming to be a friend of the middle class, not at Wurzelbacher for being middle class. Given the Bittergate fiasco and his image as an elitist, would The One really crap on a profession as quintessentially blue-collar as plumbing in a public setting, especially with the election so close? In context, I’m not even sure that the line about making a quarter mil a year is aimed at Wurzelbacher. I take his point to be not that JTP is lying about aspiring to make that much, but that even if he succeeds, he’d be such an extreme outlier that Maverick can’t fairly use him as a proxy for plumbers (or the middle class) generally.

Dear obama supporters that work,
obama says he wants to tax the rich,
do you work for someone that is richer than you or poorer than you?
do you think if they tax your employer more they will pay themselves less or pay you less or maybe not at all?
obama says he will raise the tax on oil companies to help us at the pump, do you think the gas company will pay the tax or do you think they will raise the price so we pay the more at the pump,
if you try and soak the ‘rich’ we will all end up getting wet..
obama is an elitist. the end.

Back before the economic downturn I knew quite a few plumbers who were making kick butt money! especially if they owned a business and were employing a handfull of employees.
I think that obama hasn’t got a clue that a well trained craftsman in this country is worth quite a bit.
Obama mocks the average guy which is 98% of American.
This comes from a man-child with no work experience.

Obama should be changing the subject, not feeding this particular fire - unless he really thinks he’s already won.
A society which sneers at plumbers and unquestioningly applauds academics will find neither its pipes nor its theories hold water!
Goodness, how dumb can Obama be? Doesn’t he see how bad this issue is hurting him? And now he mocks working class folks with dreams, and small businesses?
You can tell from the muted crowd response, they are not really buying into this.
This seems similar to his initial response to Palin. Mocking her for being the mayor of a town with 9000 people. He quickly backed off that too, after he saw the impact.
I am loving the controversy. Just keeps it in the news. Instead of Joe getting 24 hours of newscycles, he gets 48-72. The race is starting to get back to where we were right after the convention. When Obama spent all his time debating Palin instead of McCain.
Under the bus so far: US troops in Iraq; Granny; Jeremiah Wright; General Clark; Louis Farrakhan; Hillary and Bill Clinton; and, now, small business owners throughout America....
