Senator Government
The Wall Street Journal ^ | October 16, 2008 | Editorial

Posted on 10/16/2008 6:07:51 AM PDT by St. Louis Conservative

Whether or not last night's much-improved debate performance helps John McCain rally in the polls, at least voters finally got a clearer sense of the policy differences. For our money, the best line of the night was Mr. McCain's Freudian slip of referring to Barack Obama as "Senator Government." Neither candidate is offering policies that meet the serious economic moment. But Mr. McCain would let Americans keep more of their own income to ride out the downturn, while Mr. Obama is revealing that his default agenda is to spend money and expand the government.

APCribbing from Hillary Clinton's playbook, Mr. Obama called this week for a "90 day foreclosure moratorium for homeowners that are acting in good faith," whatever that last phrase means. When Mrs. Clinton proposed a foreclosure moratorium during the Democratic primaries, Mr. Obama had said it would lead to more expensive mortgages going forward. He was right then.

The Treasury's Hope Now program and the Federal Housing Administration are already helping to refinance homes for millions of homeowners. Anyone who isn't able to qualify for one of those voluntary programs and who still can't afford to pay a mortgage isn't likely to be any better fixed in a mere 90 days. Mr. Obama also overlooks that the banks that service the mortgages don't typically own them. They're owned by far-flung investors via a mortgage-backed security.

Mr. Obama apparently wants the feds to unilaterally rewrite contracts based on something as undefinable as "good faith." At the same time, he is repeating his proposal to change the bankruptcy code so judges can unilaterally rewrite mortgage contracts as well. All of this would make credit less available to working families in the future.

I don’t think it’s fair or proper to refer to it as a Freudian Slip.

I’m not sure it was a slip of any kind.

You think it was deliberate? Could be, and kudos to mac if it was!!!!!!!!

I do not believe it was deliberate at all. He made a bunch of similar mistakes, and it looked to me like he did not intend it at all.

I could be wrong, and it would be funny if intentional, but I really doubt it.

So you are saying it was not only not deliberate it wasn’t even a freudian slip i.e. such a thought was not even on his unconcious mind? Maybe, but short of hypnosis or some grueling psychological exam of mac, we will never know.

Whatever the case, it was a nice little sugar plum to take from the debate.

On your first sentence, yes, that’s how i take it. Just a slip of the tongue.

Yeah, it was one of the highlights of the debate for me, as well.

“Whether or not last night’s much-improved debate performance helps John McCain”

Much improved...?!

No fan of McCain’s, but he mopped the floor with Oboy!

FOX, dump the numb-nut Lutz, ASAP!

I agree, Mac isn't prone to "slip of the tongue".

Mac also confronted Obama about promising to use federal matching funds and then didn't keep his word.

I thought Mac looked good. Obama looked as tired and worn as his same old lines he's been using for nearly two years.

Mac clearly won the debate and will win the election in Nov.

McCain had a half dozen zingers, he did great and won the debate HUGE.

The Joe the Plumber aspect is a game changer in this race as reagan Democrats will flock to McCain.

McCain will win this race, hang in there.

I thought The Obama’s snide outbursts of laughter were very telling. If he didn’t laugh, he’d have been chewing the desktop out of anger.

It sure seemed to me that Obama got more time while McCain was only able to get in sound bytes.

Did anyone else notice that Obama had twice as much speaking time as McCain?

McCain needs to tie Obama and the Democrats to the financial melt-down. The falling markets are killing him in the polls. Fortunately, the facts are on McCain’s side. He just has to get them out there.

The Community Reinvestment Act was a ticking time bomb, and was made worse under Clinton.

“Community Organizers” like ACORN gleefully blackmailed banks, forcing them to make way too many loans that could never be repaid. Obama is closely tied to ACORN on many levels.

Democrats protected Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in Congress, and were richly rewarded with campaign cash and sweetheart loans as “Friends of Angelo”. Yes, a few bad-apple Republicans will be caught by this charge, but John McCain is certainly not one of them. If they took the cash, they deserve to take the hit anyway.

Slumlord Developer Tony Rezko was up to his eyeballs in this mess, and gave Obama a sweetheart deal on his house.

John McCain tried to rein in Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, but was opposed by the Democrats in Congress, including Barack Obama. Even though Obama knew that they were heading for a fall, as evidenced by the fact that he felt the need to write a CYA memo to the Secretary of the Treasury. This letter had no effect of law. McCain’s proposal would have had an effect. Obama was covering himself by voting “Present” on this crisis.

John McCain has been in the trenches trying to solve this problem, and Barack Obama has been phoning it in. And then the Obama campaign has the chutzpah to say that McCain is panicked and erratic as he tries to move the legislative process toward a conclusion.

These are the facts. McCain has to make sure people know who is responsible for this mess

I agree. Every time Mac hit him with the truth Obama snickered. Very telling.

I’m glad you’re keeping the faith. I am not as confident as you. I worry greatly about the senate.

McCain’s not slick enough to make it appear as a slip. I saw it happen, it was a slip.

It was a GREAT slip - perhaps divinely imposed.

That laughter was the same as Hillary’s “Cackle” when she was called on something uncomfortable.

You're correct.....right from the opening gong, Obama was sucking up more than his share of air time by employing the Saul Alinsky tactics which have guided his radical career.

However, his droning on and on could not have played in his favor. He looked and spoke like a mind-numbed robot.

I was watching closely when McCain came out with "Senator Government." It definitely was a slip-of-the-tongue, emerging too rapidly to be rehearsed. McCain just kept talking away, not even realizing what he had said.....and that what he had said would become famous along with "Remember the Alamo", LOL.

It DEFINITELY seemd that way to me as well. McCain would get in 2 sentences before Bob interrupted, often mid sentence, and then let BHO prattle on ad nauseum.
