Obama hits back over voter registration scandal

TOLEDO, Ohio (AFP) – Barack Obama's White House campaign charged Tuesday that desperate Republicans were waging a nationwide campaign orchestrated with John McCain's staff to intimidate voters and depress turnout.

Top aides to the Democrat battled back against what they called a Republican "smokescreen" over a liberal advocacy group called ACORN, which is under investigation in several states over allegations of voter registration fraud.

The group released a video, set to the song "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," showing McCain warmly greeting its activists at a February 2006 event in support of immigration reform.

Obama said his own ties to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now went no further than legal work he did with the Justice Department for ACORN against the state of Illinois in the mid-1990s.

"As an elected official I've had interactions with them," the Illinois senator told reporters in Ohio.

"But they're not advising the campaign. We've got the best voter registration turnout and volunteer operation in politics right now, and we don't need ACORN's help," he said.

The McCain campaign is airing a 90-second ad alleging close and enduring ties between Obama and ACORN, which it said had bullied banks into extending the kinds of subprime mortgage loans at the heart of the US financial crisis.

The group boasts of gathering the names of 1.3 million mostly non-white, low-income voters in 21 states in the most successful voter registration drive in US history.

But many of the names are said by conservatives to be duplicated, or of famous sports stars, or of cartoon and movie characters.

"McCain needs to tie Obama to Acorn with rope at tomorrow night’s debate."

You used Obama and rope in the same sentence.

Hey now, the Dems are just trying to make sure everyone has the right to vote on Nov. 4th. Because of a few mean spirited conservative, for a long time the GOP is going to be remembered as the party that disenfranchised Mickey Mouse, the starting line-up of the Dallas Cowboys and all the undead who have been brought back to life by Odumbo & ACORNOLIO.

O-Dumb-Bo.....O-Dumb-Bo....

Remember on Nov. 4th that the undead are just like you & me; plus they get to vote multiple times in multiple states.

McCain needs to tie Obama to Acorn with rope at tomorrow night’s debate.

I think McCain should refer to them as 'these so-called "community organizers"'.

Email I just received:

Why is Barack Obama trying to hide his relationship with ACORN?

According to a recent story, Obama ran leadership training seminars for ACORN and became “old friends” with them by the time he ran for Senate. But until he scrubbed his website earlier this week, Obama claimed that he “never worked for ACORN.”

So what is the true story?

A recent editorial in Investors Business Daily exposes a deep relationship between Obama and ACORN.

For starters, Obama paid ACORN, which has endorsed him for president, $800,000 to register new voters, payments his campaign failed to accurately report. (They were disguised in his FEC disclosure as payments to a front group called Citizen Services Inc. for “advance work.”)

I can see why Obama does not want to talk about his close ties to ACORN.

In Las Vegas — after the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys mysteriously showed up as a newly registered voter — authorities raided ACORN offices.

In Ohio ACORN submitted 10,000 bogus registrations.

ACORN has been hard at work in Pennsylvania too. According to a retired Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice:

“Between March 23rd and October 1st, various groups, including ACORN, submitted over 252,595 registrations to the Philadelphia County Election Board” with 57,435 rejected for faulty information. “Most of these registrations were submitted by ACORN, and rejected due to fake social security numbers, incorrect dates of birth, clearly fraudulent signatures, addresses that do not exist, and duplicate registrations. In one case, a man was registered to vote more than 15 times since the Primary election.”

And in Missouri, according to Investors Business Daily, “one ACORN registrant named Monica Rays showed up on no less than eight forms, all bearing the same signature. Suspicious election officials sent letters to some 5,000 ACORN registrants in St. Louis, asking the letter recipients to contact them. Fewer than 40 responded.”

Nevada...Ohio...Pennsylvania...Missouri.

These are all swing states where a few hundred votes could make the difference.

The mainstream media wants to help Obama run the clock without answering questions about his relationship with ACORN, which according to news reports has submitted thousands of fraudulent voter registrations this year.

We can’t let Obama off the hook.

Liberals will stop at nothing to win the White House and a filibuster-proof Senate this year. Please send this email to your family and friends so they can stay updated on the liberals’ plans for election day and next year.

Best regards,

Senator Orrin Hatch

That it was, that it was — They believed the media would actually tell them the truth ... People don’t want to get involved, read the bills — Instead, this is the result is when media goes bad, disaster.

I heard MArk Styen say today that he felt the media knows they are dead and this is their last swing. They need a bailout too.

A free country cannot reason properly with a lockstep media pushing an agenda.

Here comes the suppression allegation and it usually comes when they've been caught or their polls show them losing.

WoW, the spin never stops with this guy...John McCain was right the other night during the debate when he said, “trying to pin obie down is like trying to nail jello to the wall.”

obie is so desperate he is throwing ACORN under the bus...is anyone keeping count?

It is amazing that for such a non-issue, that obie’s team has already gone into hyper-drive over this one...

I heard Steyn too—he was talking to the fill in for Dennis Prager. That’s a good point about the media. It’s like Obama or bust with them. I don’t know if God intervenes in the affairs of man, but I sure hope he will make an exception in this case.

This is the money issue. Forget birth certificates, Muslim background, Ayers, etc., etc.

Middle America doesn’t like voter fraud. Run with it.

I think Steyn is right. It's all in time -- they are dead and know it.

A story I read said the shortfall in ad revenues for the newspaper business alone would be devastating to the newspaper business in 2008. TV news isn't doing much better.
