TOLEDO, Ohio (AFP) – Barack Obama's White House campaign charged Tuesday that desperate Republicans were waging a nationwide campaign orchestrated with John McCain's staff to intimidate voters and depress turnout.
Top aides to the Democrat battled back against what they called a Republican "smokescreen" over a liberal advocacy group called ACORN, which is under investigation in several states over allegations of voter registration fraud.
The group released a video, set to the song "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," showing McCain warmly greeting its activists at a February 2006 event in support of immigration reform.
Obama said his own ties to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now went no further than legal work he did with the Justice Department for ACORN against the state of Illinois in the mid-1990s.
"As an elected official I've had interactions with them," the Illinois senator told reporters in Ohio.
"But they're not advising the campaign. We've got the best voter registration turnout and volunteer operation in politics right now, and we don't need ACORN's help," he said.
The McCain campaign is airing a 90-second ad alleging close and enduring ties between Obama and ACORN, which it said had bullied banks into extending the kinds of subprime mortgage loans at the heart of the US financial crisis.
The group boasts of gathering the names of 1.3 million mostly non-white, low-income voters in 21 states in the most successful voter registration drive in US history.
But many of the names are said by conservatives to be duplicated, or of famous sports stars, or of cartoon and movie characters.

McCain should ignore most of the questions that the RATS have set up on the next debate and hit Obama hard. He should point that Dodd and Frank were basically responsible for the market crash.

I’m all for defeating Obama....but even apart from him, I want to see ACORN brought down, and their operatives jailed for illegal acts and fraud.

Poor Obama! When his supporters must show they are legally eligible to vote, it is so intimidating that it depresses turnout. Too Bad!

On the Hugh Hewitt radio show today, he went out and asked people in Harlem who they're voting for.
"Obama!," they all respond.
Then he brought up questions related to McCain's policies, using them as Obama's.
"So, you like Obama's pro-life stance and you don't have a problem with the troops staying in Iraq until the job is done?"
"Oh, yeah, no problem."
"So you think Palin would be a good VP? You think Obama made a good choice there, picking a woman for the position?"
"Oh, she would be fine."
A half-dozen different people, same questions, same results. Some people are just plain dumb.
The ones that I think are definitely idiots are the "undecideds." At this stage in the game, how the heck can anyone be undecided unless they knew absolutely nothing about the candidates? Or they're just sitting there going, "That guy has a nicer tie than the other guy; I'm voting for him." Unbelievable.

But in private briefings in Washington, a member of Mr Obama's inner circle of policy advisers went much further in spelling out why the campaign's working assumptions far exceed the expectations of independent observers.
"Public polling companies and the media have underestimated the scale of new Democratic voters registration in these states," the campaign official told a friend. "We're much stronger on the ground in Virginia and North Carolina than people realise. If we get out the vote this may not be close at all."
They knew what ACORN was doing!
