Actor Duvall Blasts Palin Critics at Fundraiser
October 14, 2008 8:24 AM
ABC News' Imtiyaz Delawala Reports: Introducing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin at a GOP fundraiser Monday, actor Robert Duvall blasted conservatives who have criticized the McCain-Palin ticket in recent days, calling conservative columnist George Will a "super-nerd" and former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson a "block of wood".
At an RNC fundraiser in McLean, VA, Duvall introduced Palin for the third time since her nomination to the Republican ticket, taking the opportunity to accuse Republicans critical of the McCain campaign as giving "credence to the other side."
"It bothers me that certain people in the Republican Party are attacking the McCain-Palin ticket, like super-nerd George...What's his name? Duvall asked, prompting a few attendees to laugh and shout out George Will. George...George, I can't even think. George Will," Duvall said, referring to the Washington Post columnist who has been critical of Palin.
The legendary actor then attacked former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson, who campaigned with McCain last Friday in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Thompson had expressed unhappiness with the McCain campaign in an article that appeared in Sunday's New York Times. Asked if he was happy with Sen. McCain's campaign, Thompson told the paper, "No," adding, "I don't know who is."

Duvall lives a few miles from me and we bump into him at a local restaurant every now and then. Nice guy and good conservative. Oh yeah, he’s also a pretty decent actor. I also discovered recently that he went to the same prep school that my kids attend and was kicked out. I’ve not been able to find out what the reason was. Maybe he’s a freeper and can fill us in.
A couple weeks ago I bought the Lonesome Dove DVD and rewatched it for the first time in years. It is indeed the best show ever. “Broken Trail” was mighty fine, too. “Secondhand Lions,” “Open Range,”...where do I stop?
Way to go, Mr. Duvall! Finally somebody with real stones speaking up.
I lost all respect for George Will when he remained on “This Week” when a Democrat partisan (Stephy) took the host seat and pretended it was a news show and not a pro-Democrat campaign program.
The media has proven me correct as the bias is so obvious today that George Will cannot have a brain if he thinks he is participating in a journalistic venture.
There are so many - the man can play any role.
The Natural
The doctor in Phenomenon.
As bad as the movie was, he was great as the crew chief in Days of Thunder.
Don’t forget Second Hand Lions!
ping
Good for Duvall.
I too bumped into Duval a few years back at an antique store and restaurant he owned out in hunt country, Virginia. He is a gentleman, an American treasure, and an actor who probably never played a movie role badly. His Apostle is a great moment in American film history, and when the production element ran out of funds he provided his own to see to it the film was completed.
Great news. Will really surprises me. Doesn’t he have a child with Down’s Syndrome as well?
What do you expect from a rat?
Loved that movie!! (along with the others)
Yes, The Rail Stop in The Plains, VA. A great little restaurant. Though he no longer owns it, he is still a regular there.
Of course you are correct. I need to set my expectations lower for liberals.
When George Will was in grade school, Bill Gates used to push him down and take his milk money.
A little off topic but I think the three best mini-series I have seen on televsion have been Lonesome Dove, Rich Man, Poor Man, and QB VII - in that order.
Duvall is one of my favorite actors. If I were only 20 yrs older....sigh.
I’ve always been a huge Duvall fan, and now I have one more reason to like the guy!
“Number 1,2 & 4.”
Another film he was in - True Confessions - he was absolutely great in. He starred with Robert DeNiro. Any scene without those two in it sucked. The movie shined when either one of the two was in the scene.
