The good news is that a lot of the old TCH has been resurfaced and is now relatively lightly traveled, making it a much more enjoyable drive if you’re not in too big of a hurry. I think they may have dropped the limit from 90 to 80 now that it’s not the main drag anymore (and now the traffic’s lighter and the higher limit would actually be safer, go figure). I took that route on my way west back out of NB when touring on my bike a few years ago. I’ve toured down that way on my bike quite a bit, while visiting friends back in my home town of Dartmouth, NS.

They required ID for this election. Its been free of incident. Canada is not a country known for the passion of its people.

I figured they must have been repaving it while I was there. That road was a deathtrap when it was the TCH. In the summer tourist season a lot of Americans and folks from Ontario got killed. Tons of head-on collisions.

We usually stay around Tracady Bay ( just east of Cavendish) in the Mount Stewart Area. Also like to hang out at the College of Piping in Summerside.

The seafood in the area is spectacular!

They just started requiring ID but vote fraud has not been a problem here since before the start of the 20th century. The prevailing culture has always been that turning away a voter is a serious matter and it’s pretty much an honour system where any voter who is challenged will get a ballot if they swear out an oath. The main reason there isn’t much fraud here is that in the Westminster system it doesn’t pay- it would have to be done on an enormous scale in order to swing an election so nobody bothers.

JT is an empty suit who would never have been elected if he had a different surname. The Liberals will keep him around for show but I don’t expect them to let him near anything important.

No passion is right. What was our turnout 50%?

When I was a kid you could go to a church supper and eat all the lobster you wanted for five bucks.

It’s getting lower here all the time. Voter turnout has traditionally been higher in Canada than in the USA but now it’s only around 60%- in my younger days it used to exceed 80%.

They asked for official photo id today like a driver’s license or passport or something. They accepted my mother’s social insurance card and citizenship card together (which both don’t have photo id but are government issued) and they could have got ‘sticky’ with her but they let her vote anyway.

Congratulate me please! Wow, I can’t believe this. The votes are still counting, but as a Canadian freeper, I may have helped deliver a shocking defeat to a 4-time incumbent liberal, the minority whip!

Wow, the incumbent won last time by 43% to 32% in 2006, it is now 36.7% conservative, 35.8% liberal in our riding. The incumbent won by 4,000 votes last time, the conservative is now leading by 300+ votes. Wow!

This is unbelievable. I didn’t intend to vote today because I thought it’s perhaps a very long shot for the local conservative candidate. However, I got very angry when the liberal and NDP leaders constantly bashed Harper as Canada’s George W. Bush. So I decided in the last minute to go to the poll! Wow, it looks like our local conservative candidate, a long shot, is going to win!!

I figure PEI is small and in many ways like Vermont.

The people seem to br addicted to pulling the strings on the government money bags.

And that rules politics in the liberal tradition, you vote where the money and hand outs are the heaviest.

PEI could be like a Canadian Riviera, if they just let Free Enterprise do its thing.

This was the lowest turnout election ever. With two independents who lean Conservative, the Conservatives now have 146 votes. They need to get 10 from one other party to pass all important legislation. But their improved position makes it very difficult for them to lose a vote of confidence as the three parties in opposition have to agree to vote for it. We're not going to see a new election for at least four years.

As I said before, in most years we couldn’t get 60% turnout even in Presidential years. Midterms and State/locals are even worse.

This one will be different though, and not for a good reason either. Our friends at ACORN have registered Mickey Mouse and Jimmy John as voters.

I just checked the polling data at CBC.ca and the Conservatives nationwide vote was 37%. If there had been a shift of just 1-2% to them of the nationwide vote, they would have a majority government tonight. They missed their target by 12 seats and that minuscule shift in the popular vote would have given it to them!

You know just because your candidate is a long shot is never a reason to stay home. Especially if you’re a Conservative.

Leave the staying at home business to the Dems/Libs

So how do the actual vote percentages match up to the pre-election polling? It would be interesting to see exactly how accurate Canadian pollsters are.
