Palin's folksy charm a hit in Democratic region
COLUMBUS DISPATCH ^ | 10/12/2008 | Joe Hallett

Posted on 10/12/2008 8:21:41 PM PDT by curth

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio - Sarah Palin caged the pit bull and put on the lipstick tonight, taking it easy on Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama for the first time in more than a week during a campaign event in an eastern Ohio farm field.

The Republican vice presidential nominee barely mentioned Obama in a half-hour speech after she and running mate Sen. John McCain pummeled him last week for his connection to 1960s radical William Ayers.

In an overwhelmingly positive speech focusing on McCain's record, Palin only obliquely mentioned Obama, portraying him as an extremist on abortion and almost apologizing while doing so.

"I'm not being negative, I'm not being negative," Palin said while noting that Obama supported so-called partial-birth abortion and "infant born alive" bills. The latter, passed by Congress in 2002, extends protection to a child born after a failed abortion.

"Check out the record and judge for yourself."

The velvet-glove treatment of Obama appeared to represent a change in strategy after a week in which Palin's relentless pursuit of the Ayers connection drew vitriolic anti-Obama responses from audiences in Wilmington, Ohio, and other cities.

Former U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, McCain's Ohio campaign chairman, downplayed any change of strategy and noted that Palin "was very plain on the abortion issue. She cited two specific examples. She didn't have to elaborate. She said just go look them up and drew a distinct line between what she represents and John McCain represents and someone who is pro-abortion."

Note to Dems and the media (I repeat myself): the more you run down Governor Palin as a ‘hick’, ‘common’, whatever, the more you insult the very people whose votes you need. Don’t think they aren’t paying attention. They do have the internets, after all.

Different strategies for different audiences. This plays great for independents.

This is all great except for one thing:

Former U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, McCain's Ohio campaign chairman

Why?

Hit Obama on Ayers
Hit Obama on Infanticide
Hit Obama on ACORN
Hit Obama on Rezko
Hit Obama on Odinga
Hit Obama on Democrat Causing the Sub-Prime Mess
Hit Obama on Wright
Hit Obama on Iraq
Hit Obama on Taxes
Hit Obama on Being a Big Spender

That’s 10 different speeches. Deliver the one on the top of the pile. Move it to the bottom of the pile, and deliver the next speech as the next stop. Unleash the shit-storm.

Give me five minutes, and I can come up with another ten speeches.

And in VA tomorrow hit HARD on what an Obama presidency would mean for the military and defense spending. Full broadside. Hampton Roads is all about the military and shipbuilding.

Paraphrasing Harry Truman:

“I don’t say negative things, I just tell ‘em the truth, and they think it’s negative!”

The late news here in Maine stated that Sarah Palin will appear at a rally in Bangor, Maine on Thursday!

Information on obtaining tickets to this event in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District will be available on Monday.

(Maine’s 1st Congressional district and 2nd Congressional district split their electoral votes. If Obama wins southern Maine and the statewide vote, McCain could pick up one electoral vote in northern Maine if McCain / Palin carry the 2nd Congressional district).

The McCain’s camp strategy is to win enough votes in northern Maine to carry the entire state and receive all 4 electoral votes.

Todd Palin appeared at barbeque / rallies in Maine this past Saturday and Sunday. There are a lot of McCain ads appearing on TV. Looks like the McCain campaign is serious about winning Maine on November 4th.

It’s a way to bootstrap the abortion issue into the public debate even though the media is trying hard to keep it out. In a few days she’ll hit Obama with both barrels again and the media will hyperventilate about it. In doing so they will have to talk about abortion again.

I think this is a winning strategy and should be done. This guy needs to be hit everywhere until the election and when Obama goes on the attack on the issue of the day, you go to the next issue.

While I don’t see Sarah having a warm reception in New Jersey, I do see her doing well in PA west of Lancracker, er, Lancaster. Similar demographics to eastern Ohio.

I think that all those issues are very important..but a lot of that stuff should be brought up by the 527's if there are any or the NRA .....

McCain can hit hard and name names about the economy...the freddie and fannie scandal and the payoffs ....

McCain should hit hard on the corruption ..about getting hearings and jail time...

and taxes...he should stress that our economy is too fragile to bump up taxes anymore...the American people already work 1/2 the yr just to pay taxes....

and ENERGY....hit hard on energy independence....
