Booed on the ice
It's hard to blame Sarah Palin for her booing on the ice in Philadelphia this evening. It's almost a truism of politics that if you send a pol to a sporting event, he's going to get booed. Politicians, as a class, aren't all that popular, and it's what sports fans do. According to legend, Eagles fans once booed Santa Claus. Still, not a great moment.
The Times hockey blog says the boos were "resounding." The Wilmington paper says it was an "avalanche."
I wtached it. Poor Piper wearing a Flyer jersey and having to put up with that stuff. It was a terrible idea, I don’t know what they had to gain. And you got to know, as soon as the Obama people heard the news, they bought out the cheap seats. Oh well, done now.
If I'm not mistaken, that was Eagles fans who booed Santa Claus.
Different team but very much the same level of class (or lack thereof) exhibited by their fans.)
LOL I saw the footage.
She was booed initially but then I heard a lot of cheering.
Seems pretty normal to me.
Just to add something, not all Philly fans are like that. I’m a fan of all four teams (less so the Flyers). It’s just that there ARE some really sleazy fans here. Not all though, i.e. Judge Samuel Alito is a Phillies fan but then again so is Chris “tingle” Matthews.
I’d say about 50/50 cheer to boo ratio (and for Philly that’s not bad). The Gov. look great; the hockey players were gracious (Gomez is Alaskan and gave her a kiss onthe cheek!). She needs to drop the puck at the other end of the state, in the Big Igloo...Penguin fans are waaaaaay more classy :)
I respect your opposing opinion. I have regretted my last vote for someone I knew I shouldn’t have voted for in the first place.
Here’s to hoping you never have to realize that.
I came to realize how difficult it would be to get a decent person nominated after watching my own party take a whiz on Conservative ideals for eight years. I won’t be a part of that any longer.
When it comes time to vote for Palin, you can count me in.
The “US” (some citizens/legislators) is “seceding” from us......We should remember that.
Boos from the upper deck early, quickly drowned out by cheers - overall positive reception. Patriotic music blaring throughout, presumably to drown out boos. Piper was stylin’ in a tiny Flyers jersey.
Yes, and in stark contrast to whatever booing might have been going on. Sportsmen usually have class as they have devoted much effort to get where they are. Fans, on the other hand, exert little and may exhibit the same.
For Sarah to travel this country of ours making appearances that may be 'hostile' is more than a political stunt (that the Left may want to exploit) than it is a snapshot to the class (or lack of) being displayed in a particular region.
Looking back at former sports stars I see where adulation was two part: What they accomplished on the field of play and how they carried themselves in public. Would, that their fans might emulate them.
If Sarah brings out the 'worst' in some people, it means we still have a lot of work to do. It means that what unites us (sports) may also divide us (championships) and that if we are to embrace true sportsmanship we have to 'respect' our competitors as we do ourselves and reject any urge to align ourselves with, or sink to a level of classless-ness found elsewhere, not America.
MAYBE WHEN SHE GETS ON SNL she WILL GET BOOOOOED also???
JUST A THOUGHT?
To be honest with you, whatever happened doesn’t much matter now. McCain conceded the election last night with his lavish praise of Obama. All McCain wants to do now is show that he is a good loser, “my friends.” And what Sarah now has to do is show that she can be a big winner in 2012.
Events like this could be just what we need to motivate Hillary democrats to vote against the corrupt Philadelphia machine.
It’s a stroke of luck too that there were Obama signs in the crowd — provides us good material for a NEGATIVE ad in other parts of the state.
I just watched her on YOUTUBE and I did not hear boos......I think this is a bit over stated. Hear for yourself :

No. She won’t be booed there. The SNL studio is really tiny (the audience isn’t more than 150 or so). Lorne Michaels staff can screen to assure same...and, its a very hot ticket...believe me they ‘know’ who is there. And as a VP candidate the Secret Service presence will be there as well (which I am sure makes people more inclined to behave especially in such a small crowd).
Well I'll be a contrarian, then, and say it's not necessarily a bad idea.
If she handles boos with a smile and shows people it doesn't bother her, it's possible to win some of them over.
Let's see how Obama handles his first case of resounding boos. I haven't heard of that yet.
Barry at NASCAR...now I would pay watch to that.
Just for practice, Philly fans will boo the crack in the Liberty Bell.
Hockey is Hockey and some people just love it, and a few boos (even a lot of boos) will not affect them. More than being a hockey mom she is probably a big hockey fan.
Did you know that when the NHL was on strike 3 or so years ago Gomez played the entire season on a triple A minor league (ECHL) club in Anchorage. He didn't have to do that and it risked a very lucrative career. The folks in Alaska loved it and I'm sure Sara remembers it.
