Gloria Johnson, who heads up Democrat Barack Obama's local campaign for the presidency, says she and other supporters are undaunted by polls showing Republican John McCain strongly carrying Tennessee.
Pollster.com, which provides analysis of all national and state polls, showed McCain at 57.4 percent of those polled and Obama at 37.3 percent in Tennessee on Friday.

Now she's planned a get-out-the-vote campaign that has a "staging" location and leaders in every Knox County Commission district, she said. Phone banks, canvassers, rides to the polls and poll-watching will be done at that level, she said.
"This is what we did in South Carolina. It worked beautifully," she said.
She's not sure if the statewide effort is the same, but it's similar, she said.
Johnson, a Central High School teacher, estimated the number of active volunteers at 700, with "probably 1,000 or more interested in becoming active."
They are motivated by Obama, she said.
"They are motivated by the candidate, the economy and the need for change," Johnson said.
The Republicans are still determining what their efforts for McCain will be over the next three and a half weeks, said Corey Johns, Knox County Republican Party vice chairman.
Tentative plans are for a major tailgating party at the University of Tennessee-Alabama game on Oct. 25 and a cookout rally at the parking lot of GOP headquarters at Downtown West Boulevard. The latter would be held sometime before Oct. 30
The number of voters registered in Knox County in 2008 will set a record at more than 250,000, said Greg Mackay, Knox County elections administrator. His office is still processing registrations, but he estimates another 4,000-5,000 will be added to the 249,864 registered as of Sept. 27, he said.

I suggest we get together some of these oddities in terms of registered voters vs population and see if we cant get a media friendly to investigate them.

I contacted a local “friendly” here in SE TN...
We’ll see what happens...
Dont know any personally in NE TN...
Tennessee didn’t vote for Algore either, thankfully, they won’t be responsible for putting the worst President in American history into the WhiteHouse. God help America!
They can just dream on. The only part of Tennessee Obama will carry will be Memphis, if he’s lucky. Tennessee is McCain country. There are 50 McCain/Palin signs for every one Obama sign. They can forget Knoxville. Its solid red. Even lowly little Grundy county which is usually solidly democrat did a poll the other day and it was literally 100% McCain.
Back in the democrat sweep of 2006, Tennessee was one of the only states that elected a new Republican in the US Senate race. Bob Corker.
Hey Nan,
I’m not on FR much lately, but do check daily and read your pings. I thank you so much for pinging me.
Not surprised by these numbers. East Tennessee is overwhelmingly conservative (at least voters). We do have a lot of lifetime “entitlement” types, but my experience is these folks don’t take time to vote. Maybe ACORN and the Obama folks here are planning to raise the dead!!!
They need them for Obama to win this area!!!
Obama didn’t even bother to campaign in Tennessee. He knew it was a lost cause. Why does this woman think people would bother to vote for someone who won’t even come here.
VERY good point! I hadn’t thought of that angle.
So say, the South will go....../Just Asking - seoul62.......
Obama will carry the Memphis area. Outside of that...It’s McCain/Palin territory. Memphis is a lost cause. The mayor in that towm makes Marion Bradley look like a conservative.
I know FDR yellowdogs who will be voting Repulican for the first time in their lives. Libs are the worst racists in this country
“Not too shabby, Tennessee....”
Hey, we swung the 2000 election. If Algore had gotten our 11 electorals he would have been president
“Even if you take that to mean that he expects the number of people registered to vote by election day to be 300,000, I kind of wonder about that because the total population in that county in 2007 was only 423,874. Can the population of a county expand that much in a single year? The Census number would include children wouldnt it?”
That probably includes all the students at UT who will vote illegally in Knoxburg and their home district too
It’s all part of the psychological warfare, “Obama’s up 12 Nationwide” “Obama may even take Alabama”, etc., just lies, nothing new.
They are working OVERTIME to try and get us to stay home, the only lazy people who stay home will be democrats.
Obama will take both Memphis and Nashville. Davidson county always goes dem cause its full of people on gubmint aid and bleeding heart liberals connected with Vandy.
As I said earlier, the libs are alive and well in middle TN. At least the “sophisticated” ones are. That said however, I was speaking with the parents of a friend of my grandson today. They said everybody they know (country folks) would slam the door on Obama’s face if he were to show it here. These are old time yellow dogs who won’t vote for him for love or money.
The non-sophisticates may save us again.
You got that right! I work in Cleveland and see McCain/Palin signs everywhere. The only people I’ve found to say they are voting for Obama have been black. When I asked them why they are voting for Obama they look at me like I just sprouted two heads and say “because he’s black”.
I received four McCain/Palin stickers in the mail from Cafe Press yesterday and they will go on my truck today.
