McCain Supporter Had Own Ties to Radical Protesters (Defends Prolife Priest???)
WSJ ^ | 100808 | MARY JACOBY

The McCain campaign, in a continuing effort to link Barack Obama to domestic terrorism, released a statement Wednesday from a New York supporter, recounting how his family home was firebombed by the radical 1960s group founded by Obama supporter William Ayers.

But the McCain supporter, John M. Murtagh, has his own ties to radical protesters: He served as a lawyer for a Catholic priest who led protests at an abortion clinic that turned violent.

Mr. Murtagh embarked on a media campaign in the spring to publicize the 1970 firebombing of his family home by the Weather Underground, the group that Mr. Ayers helped to found. His account of that incident, posted on the Web, has been linked to by right-leaning bloggers. Mr. Murtagh, a lawyer and a member of the Yonkers, N.Y., city council, gave a television interview last May to Fox News's Greta Van Susteren, and recently appeared on the Fox News show hosted by Sean Hannity. Mr. Murtagh said he was nine years old at the time his family was targeted because his father, a judge, had presided over a trial of members of the radical Black Panther party.

On Wednesday, the McCain campaign amplified those efforts by issuing a statement from Mr. Murtagh. "Barack Obama may have been a child when William Ayers was plotting attacks against U.S. targets -- but I was one of those targets," the statement read. "Barack Obama's friend tried to kill my family."

Mr. Ayers, now an education professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago, was an early supporter of Sen. Obama. Charges against him were dismissed in the 1980s after procedural errors by federal investigators came to light.

Here is a laughable attempt by a serious journalist at CNN to make a similar case:

Why Ayers case is risky for McCain-Palin [Barfer] (CNN ^ | 10/08/08 | Roland Martin )

This is all getting ridiculous. McCain’s swinging in quicksand here - every time he brings up Ayers it drives the independents away.

If Palin & McCain are going to win this one, they need to hit Obama on his tax plan, his plans to surrender in Iraq, and his health care plan.

The Democrats are playing Brer Rabbit here - “oh please don’t run any attacks about Rezko or Wright or Ayers!”
They know that if they can keep the focus off the issues, they have a shot at winning next month.

We’re falling into their trap. What happened to touting Palin and McCain as reformers?

Lawyers defend all sorts of people. What has he said politically himself and what criminal activities has he personally engaged in?

The real evil is attacking Murtaugh for his adult work as an attorney, in an effort to suppress the fact he was a firebombing victim at the age of 9.

The article catalogs that the priest Murtaugh represented was almost always successful in court based on free speech.

at the very end they mention that Ayers became a fugitive after three of his cohorts were blown up in their own terrorist bomb factory.

Very similar indeed.

Wonder how far they had to dig for that one? Is that the best they could do?

Mmmm...did he break the Priest out of prison and get him to a foreign country?
Did the Priest have ties in Algiers?
Was the Priest calling for a Communist government in the US?
Did he praise Fidel Castro? Chavez?
Did he spend summers picking banannas for Castro?
Did he send a birthday greeting to Ho Chi Minh by way of a Pentagon bombing on his birthday?

Wow, making sure a defendant’s Constitutional Rights are defended in a court of law...the shame!

An American presidential candidate’s close ties to anti-American terrorists is NOT an “issue”?

Okay. Whatever you say.

every time he brings up Ayers it drives the independents away.

Maybe some. Other independents are driven away from Obama. Nevertheless, I think it a good thing that the truth is being told about Obama instead of it being covered up by what used to be called the media but is now Obama's personal PR machine.

It is perfectly honest to bring up those who mentored Obama politically for 20 years.

His own book confesses his love of Marxist ideological discussions at the dorm with fellow radicals.

I’d much rather see Obama and the New Left taken down for their violent and antiAmerican political rhetoric than over some kind of drug or adultery scandal. This is defeating them in the arena of ideas.

Obama lied about his tax plan in the debate. He said that only a small exception of small business owners make more than $250,000. He had that a$$ backwards but the media didn’t call him on it. Small business owners did but can’t get traction. To take this to rallies as a talking point becomes a drawn out game of “he said/he said”. It won’t change hearts and minds.

Why not discuss the issues of abortion and the sex positive agenda? Why only health care and “iraq” and home loans and community service and green energy?

A private citizen that supports McCain happens to be a lawyer that defends criminals in Court? This is morally equivalent to planting bombs at the US Capital and murdering policeman?

The violence here is that two unidentified persons who they presume to have been protestors allegedly threw an old lady against a wall in a hallway, and it was believed this was a mistaken attack intended to be against the clinic workers because the old lady was wearing white.

Hard to understand if there was any connection, why the protestors never actually attacked any of the clinic personell. The whole story is ridiculous. It didn’t involve the priest Murtaugh represented, and they never identified any protestors as the guilty parties.

Compare that to bombing the US Capitol, Pentagon, and telling kids to kill their parents.

Astounding.

The priest was only charged with TRESPASSING and was acquitted twice, a court found he hadn’t intended to trespass and was protected by the First Amendment.

The alleged “violence” was never attributed to any protestor, much less the priest. An old lady who had nothing to do with the clinic BELIEVED that two individuals who knocked her against a wall were protestors who meant to attack a nurse. The entire story is preposterous.
