Report: U.S. Considering Taking Ownership Stake in Banks
Fox News ^ | 8 October 2008 | FoxNews

The U.S. Treasury Department is considering taking ownership stakes in many U.S. banks in a bid to restore confidence in the badly shaken financial system, the New York Times reported on its Web site Wednesday night.

The moves may come after the Treasury has had little success in unlocking frozen credit markets, The Times said, quoting unnamed government officials.

The idea is gaining support even among longtime Republican policy makers who have spent most of their careers defending laissez-faire economic policies, according to the report.

First, remember this is the NYT reporting that "longtime Republican policy makers". For all we know they are the usual suspects or some "policy makers" known only to the NYT (the infamous unnamed sources).

Second, hooray for nationalization of our banks! I mean, hey, social security is a roaring success, I'm sure government can only do good here. After all, nothing bad has ever come of socialist policies.

(Do I really need a sarcasm tag here?)

It’s time to get into the independent banking business.

ANYBODY WANT TO BORROW $10 AT 20% INTEREST?

I am good for it :)

Hmmm, seriously.... loan sharking sound like a good biz now that the fools are gone.

This is in fact the least bad idea available that will actually work. And the government will at length make a handsome profit on it. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

I hate to see permanent government control of banks. If something happens on a temporary or emergency basis to help calm the market that’s one thing. But if the gov’t is going to take control and have permanent ownership of financial institutions, that’s going towards socialism.

Let’s not stop there...

State run grocery stores

State run service stations

State run airlines

State run farming

Yep...very soon, every time some sector or the market falls on hard times, the gov. will be ready to pounce under the guise of “saving the peeps”...

Looks like we didn’t win the Cold War afterall.

This is great news! From the US government, all in one place, you can now buy a home, get it insured, invest your 401(k), get credit cards, school loans...

All we need is for the ATF to hold up their end,\ and BINGO! one-stop shopping!

“But if the gov’t is going to take control and have permanent ownership of financial institutions, that’s going towards socialism.”

I think it’s intended as a temporary emergency measure, but it seems that if these institutions get in trouble the government is as a practical matter required to help them. We might as well have our government make a profit on the no-choice investment.
