David Brooks: Sarah Palin "Represents A Fatal Cancer To The Republican Party"
E-mailed to me | October 8, 2008 | Danny Shea

David Brooks spoke frankly about the presidential and vice presidential candidates Monday afternoon, calling Sarah Palin a "fatal cancer to the Republican party" but describing John McCain and Barack Obama as "the two best candidates we've had in a long time."

In an interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg at New York's Le Cirque restaurant to unveil that magazine's redesign, Brooks decried Palin's anti-intellectualism and compared her to President Bush in that regard:

[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party. When I first started in journalism, I worked at the National Review for Bill Buckley. And Buckley famously said he'd rather be ruled by the first 2,000 names in the Boston phone book than by the Harvard faculty. But he didn't think those were the only two options. He thought it was important to have people on the conservative side who celebrated ideas, who celebrated learning. And his whole life was based on that, and that was also true for a lot of the other conservatives in the Reagan era. Reagan had an immense faith in the power of ideas. But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices.

Brooks praised Palin's natural political talent, but said she is "absolutely not" ready to be president or vice president. He explained, "The more I follow politicians, the more I think experience matters, the ability to have a template of things in your mind that you can refer to on the spot, because believe me, once in office there's no time to think or make decisions."

The New York Times columnist also said that the "great virtue" of Palin's counterpart, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, is that he is anything but a "yes man."

"[Biden] can't not say what he thinks," Brooks remarked. "There's no internal monitor, and for Barack Obama, that's tremendously important to have a vice president who will be that way. Our current president doesn't have anybody like that."

Brooks also spent time praising Obama's intellect and skills in social perception, telling two stories of his interactions with Obama that left him "dazzled":

Obama has the great intellect. I was interviewing Obama a couple years ago, and I'm getting nowhere with the interview, it's late in the night, he's on the phone, walking off the Senate floor, he's cranky. Out of the blue I say, 'Ever read a guy named Reinhold Niebuhr?' And he says, 'Yeah.' So i say, 'What did Niebuhr mean to you?' For the next 20 minutes, he gave me a perfect description of Reinhold Niebuhr's thought, which is a very subtle thought process based on the idea that you have to use power while it corrupts you. And I was dazzled, I felt the tingle up my knee as Chris Matthews would say.

And the other thing that does separate Obama from just a pure intellectual: he has tremendous powers of social perception. And this is why he's a politician, not an academic. A couple of years ago, I was writing columns attacking the Republican congress for spending too much money. And I throw in a few sentences attacking the Democrats to make myself feel better. And one morning I get an email from Obama saying, 'David, if you wanna attack us, fine, but you're only throwing in those sentences to make yourself feel better.' And it was a perfect description of what was going through my mind. And everybody who knows Obama all have these stories to tell about his capacity for social perception.

Brooks predicted an Obama victory by nine points, and said that although he found Obama to be "a very mediocre senator," he was is surrounded by what Brooks called "by far the most impressive people in the Democratic party."

"He's phenomenally good at surrounding himself with a team," Brooks said. "I disagree with them on most issues, but I am given a lot of comfort by the fact that the people he's chosen are exactly the people I think most of us would want to choose if we were in his shoes. So again, I have doubts about him just because he was such a mediocre senator, but his capacity to pick staff is impressive."

Here we go again. The same old story. Another Democrat President will be lauded as the SMARTEST man on the face of the earth...................and of course the dumbest woman on the face of the earth, not to mention a fatal cancer for the GOP, is a Republican.

Northeast elitist liberals [GOP or Dims] make me ILL!!!!

Unlike Biden, at least Sarah Palin has read Article I of the U.S. Constitution.

So in other words, David Brooks just admitted to America he is intellectually dishonest. How did such a "conservative" poseur ever get a job with Bill Buckley?

Anyone who works for the treasonous New York Times, gleefully attends a soirée for the left-wing Atlantic Magazine at the très chic Le Cirque restaurant and celebrates the work of democratic socialist Reinhold Niebuhr is about as much of a "conservative" as Barack Obama. Brooks is an effete gay urbanite who passes as a man of the "right" in Manhattan because he wears Brooks Brothers suits and doesn't sport an earring.

Hey Brooks, Good Fences Make Good Niebuhrs

Brooks likes eggheads, is an egghead and even tries to claim Ronald Reagan as an egghead - which he was not. Intelligent, with good conservative free market values, Reagan wasn’t staying up late reading Reinhold Niebuhr, but it was a nice try by Brooks.

Reagan would have loved Palin, I am sure of that.

Brooks is confused - Obama is a political opportunist who has never taken a risk and only sought higher office in a typically cut throat fashion. His surrogates opened up Jack Ryan’s divorce papers and he benefited while saying ‘how terrible’. No change there. He is not a real “leader”, perhaps a fascinating history teacher at an all white boarding school, but definitely not someone that men will follow into battle. It is obvious to me that there is a certain cowardice to him, a sneakiness about what he truly believes, and how he is disguising himself to the electorate. It is really distasteful, how this hollow man who selected a psycho church that matched his leftist values, is navigating the political shoals of black ultra nationalism and hate into the living rooms of white adoring fans and using Christianity as a cover. No one knows anything about him. He accomplishes this by not explaining his beliefs nor the people that brought him to this point, and having the media for the most part not actually investigate him. He joined the Chicago machine - and was in the process of selling himself to Tony Rezko the fixer, when justice incredibly peaked in. Had Obama turned in just one corrupt Democratic politician in Chicago, just one, I would think different, but he is no change. Frankly, he is a whore’s whore and I see nothing unique about this skell, glomming something that he had no right owning, and selling his soul politically without batting an eye. He lacks effect, like a stone cold killer. Obama sure can lecture about morality but you just won’t catch him practicing it.

This media is in the bag which is disgusting - but Brooks claims all this substance when there is absolutely none - and why, because he knows Niebuhr, give me a break.

Bombast on the part of Mr. Brooks does not entitle him to rule.

In fact, Sarah is the death knell for the RINOs in the GOP. Particularly as she is now the heir-apparent.

Cheers!

Are Brooks and Peggy Noonan dating? They've been drinking too much Manhattan Koolaid.

I wish both of these elite effete RINOs would just GO AWAY.

Minus_The_Bear says: “Romney and his supporters are scum.” What do you say?

I say, "I am rubber, Minus_The_Bear is glue...." Or at least that is what I would say if I were in kindergarten.

Speaking of school, did anyone else see Mitt take Lou Dobbs to school yesterday? The American voter did not deserve Romney and now have the candidates they deserve.

...and the founding fathers, who also foresaw the possiblities for corruption, and planned for citizen government (cf. Buckley's government by the first 200 names rather than the Harvard faculty).

Brooks is merely a hagfish who worries that his parasitic sinecure as a member of the chattering class will be abolished and he will have to turn tricks in Thailand, should we ever return to the vision of the founders.

Cheers!

Brooks has gone completely native.

He’s Conrad’s Mistah Kurtz, lying feverish in his Upper West Side hut, muttering, “Palin...the horror! The horror!”

Who is David Brooks...

He is just another excellent reason not to ever willingly contribute hard earned money to the Rat playground known as PBS.
