Catholic Church Is Riven by Internal Debate (Politics)

As the Roman Catholic Church observes its annual respect life Sunday in this heated presidential election season, the unusually pitched competition for Catholic voters is setting off a round of skirmishes over how to apply the churchs teachings not only on abortion but also on the war in Iraq, immigration and racism.
...
Being right on taxes, education, health care, immigration and the economy fails to make up for the error of disregarding the value of a human life, the bishop wrote. It is a tragic irony that pro-choice candidates have come to support homicide the gravest injustice a society can tolerate in the name of social justice.
In response, a coalition of liberal lay Catholics is pushing back, criticizing the bishops message for neglecting other aspects of life talked about in Catholic social teachings, like concern for the poor.

Thank you for this post. There is no real problem among true Catholics, no real Catholic supports anyone in favor of murdering babies, nor do they support THEFT by governments to transfer income from society’s parasites. Charity is voluntary and a good thing. Government run extortion and income transfer is pure theft. Voting against an incompetent idiot is not racism. Racism is 99% of blacks (or whatever race) voting for the black (or whatever race) on the basis of their race in spite of the fact that that individual is a blithering idiot Socialist.
Unfortunately, my parish has a Jesuit pastor. He is great at soliciting funds, praying for peace and ‘social’ justice but says nothing about supporting abortionists or pedophile clergy - of course, our Bishop McCormack still refuses to acknowledge that his assigning known pedophiles to other parishes so they could prey on other children was any thing other than a minor failure in judgment, if that.
The Jesuits are very effective in spreading their rot throughout the Church.

“In response, a coalition of liberal lay Catholics is pushing back, criticizing the bishops message for neglecting other aspects of life talked about in Catholic social teachings, like concern for the poor.”
The “coalition of liberal lay Catholics” is factually and theologically WRONG about the question - “social justice” - and the issues - how to work for it.
Why are they wrong?
Because their answer is the political equivalent of abortion - socialism; killing human liberty for a Utopian political agenda.
Ask yourself if Yeshua ever intended to place His mission - ANY PART OF HIS MISSION - in the power structure of secular government? No, He did not.

YEP i know “liberal catholics” are on the margins of church.
In the Catholic church Bishops ,and the Pope at their head, lead, teach and rule the christians.
The Catholic church consistently condemn abortion but doesn’t make the choice of SSocialism as model of society.
The Catholic church ,on the contrary,is firmly opposed to every totalitarianisms...
Litard catholics represent only themselves AND NOT at all the church

Freedom has an inverse relationship to human rights abuse.
The Democratic Party consistently undermines Freedom.

I dislike the so-called “Seamless Garment” argument. Nothing trumps abortion — it stands on its own. Do not lump it in with racism, the Iraq war, poverty, etc. I think the Seamless Garment was created so people can rationalize their continuing support for the Democratic party.

Kmeic should be kicked in the butt on sight - and shoved out the door of whatever church he happens to be infesting.
The NYT may think there’s a conflict, but there really isn’t: The Pope and many others have pointed out that there is NO issue as important as life. “Concern for the poor” is by no means a Democrat monopoly, in any case; cynical exploitation of the poor, on the other hand, may be...but I guess the Dems don’t want to go there!
In any case, what is clearly needed is for more bishops to stand up and point out the obvious. The bishops don’t seem to realize how important this is.
I suspect that Obama the Freak is going to win. The first names on his list will be Catholic names, because we are the only group that has had an institutional opposition to his program. If the bishops stand up now and present a united front, it’s going to be much harder for him to do things like seize Church properties or sic the IRS on them. If they’re not united, on the other hand, the Church is going to be subject to serious legal persecution, and I suspect we will then see an Anglican-style “American Church” arise (populated by the pro-Obama folks). The latter will, as the Anglicans did, seize all the property and titles of the actual Catholic Church.
Most of the US bishops will probably be just fine with it, alas, as they were in England lo these many centuries ago. The only difference is that Obama is much more dangerous than Henry VIII, because he actually has an agenda beyond his own personal convenience and ease, which was Henry’s main concern.

What liberal “Catholics” have done is replace government and themselves for God. The social justice types may even have good intentions but they are pushing themselves and their ideas as solutions to every ill in the world rather than God’s.
They seek Utopia on earth rather than actually, actively seeking God.

So by accepting smaller evils, it's okay to support a much larger evil, as long as they are the "right" smaller evils?

I know nothing in Yeshua’s mission that said He expected His followers to build “heaven on Earth”, to simply be delivered to Him when he comes!!!; as if His presence on Earth was not needed.
The idea is outrageous.
Human’s are not capable of it and they only create tyranny when they attempt it.
Does that mean human’s should NOT live Christian lives, themselves, and in their private associations and philanthropic endeavors express Christian charity to others? No. But, Christian charity is not socialism. The heart of socialism is to take from others to do what YOU deem benevolent. The heart of Christian charity is completely about giving, and taking from others, especially by secular power, has nothing to do with giving.

The idea being articulated here is all wet.
Where did the liberals get the idea that supporting big government social programs was somehow salvific and a substitute for charitable giving, and which even provides indulgence for committing sins like abortion and sodomy?
They’re mixed up for certain.

I suspect that Obama the Freak is going to win. The first names on his list will be Catholic names . . . They certainly will: Biden, Kennedy, Sebelius, and a host of others. The most prominent Catholics in America will line up to kiss his butt and get their share of the spoils. Sebelius will probably bring George Tiller with her, just in case anybody else in the line feels burdened with a baby.
That's what Catholic involvement in the Public Square in this country has come down to. Salt of the earth? Light of the world? It's a sick joke.

Notes:
-
Previous #23 has been removed. Bishop Joseph Gossman of Raleigh, NC is actually the bishop emeritus, and the new bishop, Michael Burbidge has not, to my knowledge, made a personal statement.
-
Previous #16 has also been removed, it was an erroneous duplication of current #13.
-
#26 was added September 10th, although he published his column September 6th

Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton, Pa., has ordered every priest in the diocese to read a letter warning that voting for a supporter of abortion rights amounts to endorsing homicide.

Asked how his former Republican colleagues were responding to his Obama evangelism, Mr. Kmiec acknowledged some resistance. Some remind me that George Washington gave orders for Benedict Arnold to be shot on sight, he said.
