.- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last Tuesday vetoed a bill that would have instated a statewide Harvey Milk Day in honor of the homosexual rights hero and encouraged public schools to observe the day by conducting exercises remembering and recognizing his life.
The vetoed bill AB 2567 was proposed by Assemblyman Mark Leno, a San Francisco Democrat. It would have set May 22, Milks birthday, as a day of special significance and required the governor to proclaim Harvey Milk Day on May 22 every year, the California Catholic Daily reports.
This bill would put California on record as recognizing the social contributions that Harvey Milk made to our nation as a civil rights leader, Leno explained in a legislative analysts review of the bill. It would also allow schools to conduct activities that would foster respect for all, and educate students about an important figure who is often omitted from history lessons."
In 1977 Milk won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly homosexual man elected to an important political office in the United States.
The following year, he and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by another Supervisor, Dan White.
Gov. Schwarzenegger explained his veto in a message to the California Assembly, saying:
I respect the authors intent to designate May 22nd as Harvey Milk Day and a day of special significance for California public schools and educational institutions to honor Harvey Milk as an important community leader and public official in the city and county of San Francisco. However, I believe his contributions should continue to be recognized at the local level by those who were most impacted by his contributions. For this reason, I am unable to sign this bill.
LOL! Still, Dianne became a star from that day forward.
In fairness, Milk and Moscone were killed in different rooms minutes apart. Your scenerio makes it seem possible that Milk could have saved Moscone, when in fact he could not.
Harvey Milk was a snarling, supercilious, self-important punk who crossed the wrong guy. It destroyed them both.
I just couldn’t go there.
Your wife is no doubt proud of her French heritage. The solution is quite simple. Just start humming the 'Marseillaise' and quote ...
Aux armes, citoyens!
She'll get the point, real fast. Here is the full text in both French and English.
There were, of course, other ways to attack them (I proposed involvement of the FBI), but the fact is Harvey Milk was in the conspiracy up to his neatly manicured armpits.
He knew and he could have been in there protecting Moscone long before White showed up.
He was the first openly gay supervisor in San Francisco. He was also killed as he witnessed the murder of the mayor. Wrong place, wrong time and paid with his life.
When does California celebrate Ronald Reagan day?
You shoulda gotten a German wife, dude. ;-)
Correct me if I am wrong here but I think I just saw a preview for a movie with Sean Penn in it playing this Harvey Milk person. Since I don’t like Penn anyway I wasn’t interested but the subject of the movie was a turn off also. Penn had lost a lot of weight and just seemed like a weasel. A “sweet” weasel but still a weasel.....
Stopped clock ... right twice daily
Don't be so sure. The Brain Tumor will eventually sign such legislation. He is the evolving Brain Tumor.
How about:
"...those who were most impacted by his contributions..."(Reminds me about how gay men are always faster at getting ready to travel, because their sh*t is already packed...)
But it would be wrong to go there, too.
Harvey Milk...There’s a name from the past!
I heard that the real story in San Francisco was that Dan White’s wife told him to go out and get “bologna and milk” and he thought she said “Go get Moscone and Milk.”
I’m tired of efforts by homosexuals to milk this for all it’s worth.
Okay by me-—have at it.
I know all that. So what? Is that heroic??? NO.
Wadda ya wanne bet Arnie sleeps on the sofa for a week?
Liberal Maria is not gonna like this——she won’t take Arnie’s veto lying down, I betcha.
Frank’s suggestion would be “Milking Harvey” day. sorry
Never mind Harvey Milk; be careful of that Chinese milk!
