Woman behind Duke lacrosse scandal speaks out

Accuser talks to Aggies about being a student again after controversy surrounding trial faded

Alexandria Harper Contributor

It was called a scandal but made into mockery.

The Duke lacrosse case hit radio and television stations by storm in 2007. Reporters from media outlets around the country scrambled to provide day to-day updates on Crystal Gail Mangum, the accuser, and three Duke Lacrosse players; Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and David Evans, the accused.

Mangum, a former exotic dancer and escort, accused these men of sexual assault in Mid-March of 2006.

The investigation dragged on for over a year and was finally dismissed by Attorney General Roy Cooper.

The case was never argued in court and Mangum has yet to have her say about what happened. She still believes she needs to set the record straight.

On Thursday, April 2, Mangum made a surprise visit to Crosby Hall. Her appearance was only made known to a few select students enrolled in Dr. Myra Shird’s Argumentation and Debate class.

Preparations for Mangum’s visit were ongoing all semester. Students researched details of the case but were never really sure if Mangum would actually appear.

As Mangum took her seat, silence overtook the classroom. Students, eager to ask questions, began organizing notes and uncapping pens to write down her responses.

The class was witnessing history as this was the first time Mangum addressed a live audience to tell her story.

Dressed in a beige blouse and black necklace, Mangum read a prepared statement. She gave an overview of her position and then opened for questions One of the first questions asked was how she got the job dancing for the Duke Lacrosse players that night.

Mangum said, “I worked for an escort service connected to the nightclub and was hired to dance at the party.” Once her involvement was made clear, another student asked where and how did the attack take place.

Mangum said, “She was sexual assaulted by three men from behind and then sodomized by what she believed to be a broom stick.”

James Blocker, a senior Liberal Studies major, touched on a very sensitive issue when he asked, “Was the attack racially motivated?”

Mangum responded, “I was sexually assaulted by three people and they used racial slurs.”

In the heat of discussion a student posed a hypothetical question.

One said, “46 out of the 47 Duke Lacrosse players were DNA tested for possible semen excretion into the accuser’s body

The 47th member was not tested because he was black. Is it possible this 47th member could be the missing link in this case?”

Mangum said, “Absolutely not, my attackers were white.”

The same student wanted to know what Mangum thought about the CBS interview of Kim Roberts done by the late Ed Bradley.

Roberts, a second dancer present at the party was asked of Mangum’s condition after the alleged sexual assault took place.

Roberts said, “She [Mangum] obviously wasn’t hurt, she was fine.”

The student went on further to ask Mangum, “Why would she say that.”

Mangum replied “I believe Kim Roberts was paid off to not say anything.”

As questions of intent and motive were answered students left the discussion feeling a bit unsure of what to believe. Mangum’s powerful in class testimony altered many minds.

Some undergraduates more skeptical of Mangum’s commentary and felt there was no substantive evidence to prove her story. All students did however agree that justice was not served.

Missing DNA evidence found throughout the house was ruled out before police properly evaluated it. Assumptions regarding both the lacrosse players and Mangum character distorted much of the facts.

District Attorney Mike Nifong was disbarred due to his mismanagement of the case. These missing pieces combined made for a nasty situation.

Mangum however is looking forward. The soon to be N.C. Central alum, is set to publish a book entitled “The Last Dance for Grace” and hopes to set the record straight.

Mangum said, “She is striving to get her PhD and to open a group home for sexually assaulted women.”

This is a picture of Mangum LEAVING the Party!

Not too many people Smile wide after being gang-raped with a Broomstick!

Again, this is her LEAVING. This picture is a little degraded, where computer resources allow - this photograph shows her Smiling Big as day - with a Time stamp correlating to her LEAVING the Party. Other evidence corroborates this is a photo of her Departing. `

Let me tell you what. If this article was written by anyone enrolled at NC A&T, the Chair of their English Department has just raped every student at that university and sodomized my mind.

What a completely horrid piece of writing. It might get a gold star in third grade, but that’s about it. I had to read it twice, just because I couldn’t believe how poorly it was written.

Let her sell her book, then have to turn the money over to those rich white boys. Have them sue her so she gets her day in court. And what about the people in the article, wasn’t it a debate class? Then debate, ask her why she was full of so many other guys DNA, ask her why her time line doesn’t add up, ask her why she showed no signs of a beating at the hospital, but did hours later, after her boyfriend gets to her. But no, they feel justice wasn’t done. Good Lord! This whole case sickened me.

This whole case sickened me.

It's unbelievable a debate class wouldn't ask her one question about evidence refuting the living daylights out of her testimony?

You're abosolutely right! Let her book sell and then sue her with unrentlentless abandon! I heard they may not have gone after her because of "mental issues." Yeah, think?

The Return of Crystal Gail Mangum and Renewed Accusation in Duke Lacrosse Case
Posted by Bill Anderson at October 7, 2008 11:04 AM

It been nearly 18 months since North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper declared the three falsely-accused Duke lacrosse players “innocent” of raping and assaulting Crystal Gail Mangum. The prosecutor who brought the charges, Michael Nifong, was duly disbarred and the North Carolina State Bar declared emphatically that the charges were a lie.

Since no criminal charges were brought against, Mangum, the police (who falsified evidence and lied to grand juries), the “sexual assault” nurse at Duke University Medical Center who fabricated much of the story, and, of course, Nifong himself, all that has been left has been the many lawsuits against Durham, Duke, and Nifong. In other words, much of the case has been off the radar screen.

However, all of that has changed. Mangum has gone onto the speaking circuit, and now is claiming she was assaulted “with a broomstick” and that the original charges were true. She also is coming out with a book that will “tell all” and continue to repeat the lie.

This is not a singular effort on her part. It seems that the “man behind the curtain” is an attorney for the North Carolina NAACP, Al McSurely. It was McSurely who was hyping the charges very early and made it known to Nifong that he would not win the Democratic primary in May 2006 unless he brought charges before the election.

It also was McSurely who demanded — and won — a gag order against the defendants in the lacrosse case. (Nifong already had stopped making public statements.) And it was McSurely who posted an awful list of accusations on the North Carolina NAACP website. (Scroll down to see McSurely’s handiwork on the lacrosse case.) In fact, the NAACP left up the accusations for several months after Cooper’s announcement that the accused player were “innocent.”

McSurely is an old-time Marxist, having been at this game for many years. It is not a coincidence that the Marxist websites like Counterpunch and others supported Nifong and tried to intimate that the charges were true, even after Cooper’s announcement. The standard line from the Marxists is that people were “bought off” by the “capitalists.”

By the way, McSurely also is behind Crystal’s upcoming book, serving as the agent of the organization that is publishing this upcoming pack of lies. My sense is that he wants to turn the tide not only against the lacrosse players and their various lawsuits, but most likely hopes to be able to get Crystal to file suit against the players in the future.

In the 1930s, the Communist Workers Party provided funds for the defense of the Scottsboro Boys, who were falsely accused of rape by Alabama authorities. Today, the people of the same ideology are working to frame innocent young men for rape.
