ormer football star Lawrence Phillips was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison, two years after he was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon.
The 33-year-old former Nebraska running back has been jailed since August 2005, when he drove onto a field near Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and his car struck three boys, ages 14 and 15, and a 19-year-old man, who suffered cuts and bruises. The car narrowly missed three other people, prosecutor Todd Hicks said.

A product of Tom Osborne's filthy Nebraska football program. The precursor to Univ of Miami and now Ohio State.

I always liked Osborne until the Phillips incident. After reading what he did, I was surprised he didn't get a long prison sentence. Instead he didn't even get a slap on the wrist.
I guess once a goon, always a goon.

“A product of Tom Osborne’s filthy Nebraska football program”
Tom Osborne accumulated more football Academic All-Americans in his 25 years as coach than any other football program in the nation has produced in its history,
Larry Phillips was a thorn in his side.

Sadly, they have let scum rob gas stations. sell dope, etc.
I call myself a Nebraska grad and fan, but; I was not thrilled to see the likes of Johnny Rodgers or Danny Murtaugh, etc.
The latter was a huge man, an all America tackle in 1970 or so. He and his father beat the hell out an Omaha bar owner. They came back, only to meet a good friend. That friend lost the last qualifying fight for the US olympic heavyweight boxing team. The man who beat him was Floyd Petterson. The Murtaugh family men were knocked out cold.

If you actually read what Tom Osborne had to say about the Phillips situation you might have another opinion.
Tom Osborne was trying to help a troubled young man but it didn’t work out. There are those that do not wish to be helped.
Now, if you want to talk about a coach doing something for a player simply to help the team then take a look at Bob Devaney and his intervention for Rogers. (btw, I still revere Devaney).
Also, you might want to look at any other myriad of big time college football programs and you’ll find much worse than what happened in regards to Phillips.
Tom Osborne gets villified based upon small information.

Your timeline is off. Univ of Miami had a very bad rep long before Lawrence Philips was playing at Nebraska. Philips was at Nebraska in the mid 90’s. Miami started turning into Thug U as soon as Jimmy Johnson showed up (early 80’s).

Most of them before the 85 scholarship limit when Nebraska had 300 football players on scholarship. Amazing how the Cornshucker program went into the toilet when they couldn't stockpile 4 and 5 star running backs 8 deep in the depth chart.
Of course, USC nowadays had the best team in NCAA football that money can buy. It's amazing how much rule breaking you can get away with in the L.A. Market.
Hey, what's that Heisman trophy winner Eric Crouch up to these days?

Phillips was more than a troubled young man, he was a brutal criminal.
I can't know what was in Osborne's heart but it appears he was helping himself and the team's record more than any thing else.

Tom Osborne is a class act. His mentoring program speaks for itself. No - everyone is not going to be helped and Lawrence Phillips is, unfortunately, one of those people. But, it is NOT because TO didn't try to help him. It is because Phillips took his natural talents (a gift from God) and squandered them. No one is to blame but himself.

If he is a Chokelahoma fan then it takes alot of balls to say that about Osborne considering the 5 decades of terror that Norman went through from the University Club up until Switzer was finally run out of town.
