If you actually read what Tom Osborne had to say about the Phillips situation you might have another opinion.
Tom Osborne was trying to help a troubled young man but it didn’t work out. There are those that do not wish to be helped.
Now, if you want to talk about a coach doing something for a player simply to help the team then take a look at Bob Devaney and his intervention for Rogers. (btw, I still revere Devaney).
Also, you might want to look at any other myriad of big time college football programs and you’ll find much worse than what happened in regards to Phillips.
Tom Osborne gets villified based upon small information.
I can't know what was in Osborne's heart but it appears he was helping himself and the team's record more than any thing else.
I am CU grad and hate Nebraska. Osborne gets a bum rap. He had thousands of kids thru his program and had a great record of graduation. A few were bums. Only Phillips is responsible for what he did. Coach Osborne tried to help and was taken apart for it. No good deed goes unpunished.
You nailed it. It was Devaney. The other schools have far more if not as much dirt. Heck, we had Pacman Jones here in Nashville. Now, no one can tell me he was not a thug in college.
