The elevation of Joseph Ratzinger to Pope Benedict XVI has brought a new assertiveness to the Roman Catholic Church, especially at the intersection of politics and life issues. The new prefect of the Vatican Supreme Court, the former Archbishop Raymond Burke of St. Louis, warned in an interview with an Italian newspaper that the Democratic Party is well on its way to becoming the “party of death” in the United States. Burke called for greater discipline within the American church for holding Catholic politicians accountable for their actions:
Vatican officials seldom single out political leaders who differ with the Church on issues like abortion rights or embryonic stem cell research. But now that the Vatican’s highest court is led by an American, the former St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke, we can expect things to get more explicit in Vatican City — at least when when it comes to U.S. politics.
Burke, who was named prefect of the Vatican’s Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature in June, told the Italian Catholic newspaper Avvenire that the U.S. Democratic Party risked “transforming itself definitively into a party of death for its decisions on bioethical issues.” He then attacked two of the party’s most high profile Catholics — vice presidential candidate Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — for misrepresenting Church teaching on abortion.
He said Biden and Pelosi, “while presenting themselves as good Catholics, have presented Church doctrine on abortion in a false and tendentious way."

Is the legalization of ‘physician-assisted’ suicide a plank in the Dem party platform? If it isn’t, it will be and soon . . . and with universal health care it won’t be all voluntary. If it’s ‘publicly’ funded then the ‘public’ will have a say as to how (and for how long) their money is spent.

They defend and promote killing the helpless unborn, disabled, ill, and in Barack Obama’s case, even the children who have the audacity to survive being salted inside and out.

Not to be too picky about this, but Raymond Burke is actually Archbishop Emeritus of St. Louis, a title very rarely bestowed to ANYONE on the Church. When he announced it at his farewell Mass, he cried. He really did. I was there and he cried. Burke rarely ever shows emotion, so we knew it meant a lot to him.

My daughter goes to Catholic school. She is in the 6th grade and the kids talk politics (which generally means their parents’ politics.) My daughter is disgusted with all of the Obama supporting families in her class. She has been telling her friends that Obama supports abortion, and they tell her that he doesn’t (and no, I haven’t put her up to this, and I have told her to be careful how she talks to people about politics.) The hate for Palin coming from these church-going, Catholic schooled children amazes me.

Thanks for that reminder. Archbishop Burke was the strongest of the tiny group (what, 10 at the outside?) of bishops in this country who are fulfilling their God-given responsibility to teach, govern and sanctify. It’s easy to see why he was promoted to his current position in the Vatican. He has basically been a lone voice crying out the truth in the moral wilderness, and was looked upon a few years back by his fellow American bishops as an old fuddy-dud who was embarrassing them with his constant insistence on doctrinal clarity. But what happened is his courage empowered a few others, and in 2006 we suddenly saw more bishops speaking out. Now this year even some of the wimpy ones finally jumped on the bandwagon over the Pelosi and Biden abortion statements. None of that would be happening now if Burke had not led the way.
