Florida Gop Meets In Secret As Obama Passes McCain In Polls
Saint Petersburg Times ^ | 10/2/08 | Alex Leary, Jennifer Liberto, & Steve Bousquet

Florida Republican leaders hastily convened a top secret meeting this week to grapple with Sen. John McCain's sagging performance in this must-win state.

Their fears were confirmed Wednesday when four new polls showed Sen. Barack Obama leading, a reversal from just a few weeks ago when McCain was opening up an advantage....

One of the concerns has been the relationship between grass roots volunteers across the state and far fewer paid campaign staffers. Complaints range from not getting yard signs quickly enough to knowing who will speak at events and overall manpower coordination....

McCain supporter and former Republican Party of Florida chairman Tom Slade said he's been hearing rumblings over the past few weeks that the campaign is not fully utilizing volunteers, though he said that was not the case in Jacksonville.

"I get the sense that on the statewide basis, the grass roots Republicans don't quite feel like they have a natural fit within the McCain organization," Slade said....

Let’s play this game......I heard, from many Democrats, that Osbama is planning to position the Demofascist Party to rule this country for the next 1000 years. These unamed sources said, in a “TOP SECRET MEETING”, many sane Democrats are secretly going to vote for McCain. Prove anything I just said may not be true.

I wish I could just be in a coma until 2012.

Why can’t they learn that the media will NEVER be on their side? How many times does one have to have the rug pulled out from underneath them?

What are campaign dollars going for if not distributing campaign material.

The McCain campaign is simply trying to use their dollars wisely. They weren't giving out campaign signs in Kansas for free either - because it is very unlikely that Obama could take Kansas.

Sure, I'd like to have been able to get a free campaign sign (although a sign and a bumper sticker were only $7) but I'd rather have them spend the dollars on a kick butt campaign ad.

I think McCain simply has no idea what to do next, and is just trying stuff at random hoping that one of them works.

“This suggests a problem more fundamental than ineptitude at distributing lawn signs and assigning manpower....”

This “problem” (the idea of a mass of Republican voters turned off by social conservatism) is a media theme every election. Yet every election more Democrats are turned off by culture of death than Republicans by social conservatism. Besides, philosophically, capitalism without a moral order is not better than socialism.

They won’t learn because they don’t want to. They are so full of Madison Avenue jello-headed marketing-think that they can’t see straight.

those are the giuliani voters.

I see this with pro abortion republican women. (or women who are only republican by marriage)

They fear conservatives because of something in their lives they did and do not want to admit it was wrong. (for example an abortion)

Keep in mind the st pete times is FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR to the left in all aspects. This anecdote business is the stock and trade of the left. find a SINGLE point and say that makes a line.

Yep I never could of imagined people in the USA embracing Karl Marx. That was my mistake. I thought all I had to do is expose the fact that Obama is a communist. WRONG. They like it. The majority now thinks capitalism and free markets and individualism are terrible. They want security of the government nanny...communism.

If she can somehow reverse the impression she left in the last few interviews, it could get competitive again.

If she uncorks one more Miss Teen South Carolina state-of-consciousness ramble (that will be replayed ad nauseam by the talking head shows and late-night comics), it's all over.

What is wrong with the republican party????

Nothing, if you were losing, isn't this what you would do, say you are winning.

I just attended a big rally up the road, for the girl, err, make that the Suncoast Gun Show, and we are fired up for Palin. Not so fired up for what's his name.

Sarah is coming to town ...

Don't let the negative polling and drive by media get you down, that's what they want to happen. The Democrats always try to drive down the Republican vote with push polls and baked drive by stories. No body actually reads the 'red rag', it's a shell of it's former self.

I complained twice to McCain's campaign via e-mail about this very thing---but for Ohio, not Florida.

No reply.

For crying out loud, what is wrong with people? What has happened to my country?

Our whole society is dumbing down. Obama is ahead not because he has good ideas on leading the country, but because he's young, good looking, black and has a pleasant speaking ability.

All fine qualities if you're competing on American Idol, but lousy reasons for selecting the next President of the United States.

I am in fear for the future my kids will be inheriting. We're about to elect a racist marxist as President, and the majority seems to think that's OK.

Public school system thinks Karl is a swell guy and teach it that way. When was the last time Communism was a big issue in America? 1990? So you have to be at least 36 or so to remember Communism first hand.

I like to play a game with the 30 somethings and ask them what they know about Communism ... Best they muster is blank stare. Liberals like that.

I am calling registered voters in Brevard County, actually Cocoa and Melbourne. I am getting a good response in my calls. I think that the McCain/Palin ticket will do as well as Bush/Cheney did here in 2004. The Bush/Cheney campaign received twenty thousand more votes than did sKerry/giggolo in the combined voter totals of Brevard/Indian River County, and I suspect that we will come away with that same margin on November 4th.

Have no fear.....Florida is not going blue.

So the Demo-nazis are planning a 1000-year Reich? Let's hope it doesn't do as much damage or last as long as the Deutscho-nazis' version.

Obama should have held his rally in Nuremberg rather than Berlin.

no offense intended...

I just see the republican party disorganized.

I live in NJ and cannot get a lawn sign. Previous elections I had lawn signs up on labor day.

I know NJ is a lost cause - but I am campaigning for McCain/Palin in PA. I will be travelling to PA every weekend until the election. At least that state is a possibility.
