Since the $700 billion bailout plan went down in the House of Representatives by a 228-205 margin, talking heads and politicos have been looking for ways to circumvent Congress and give the executive branch the authority to perform a bailout without their consent.
Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., first made the suggestion to NBC News correspondent Kelly ODonnell. His senior economic adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, later confirmed to MSNBC that McCain said Congress has already given the Treasury Department authority to bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to the tune of a trillion dollars.

We have been had on this crises — there is no crises — it has been manufactured by Paulson because as Jim Robinson so aptly pointed out the Federal Reserve releases money into supply every day. Paulson and the Fed Reserve Chair had the authority like they used yesterday so why didn’t they talk about having to do that instead of this huge crises that was going to send us into a depression.
Personally believe the FDIC should insure for more then $100,000 and $250,000 looks about right.
Once again, they had the authority so WHY the bailout? Ask yourselves — is this about getting more liberal programs in the bill? YES! Is this about helping Obama WIN by undermining McCain and Republicans? YES!
Personal opinion — manufactured crises to help Obama win along with keeping the House and Senate and why the Dems did not whip voters yesterday — they wanted this to fail.
“Buying interest was fueled by short-covering, bargain hunting”
What’s your source? No Bush/Democrat spin that the uptick is on hopes of a new bill.
Sadly, what you say is true. I remember being told ad nauseum that Hunter was “just” a House Republican and that was the same as being nothing. The Republicans in the House are the last vestiges of Conservatism.
Wall St. and the rest of the Country Club Pubbies despised him. What I said in reply is what I say now. Wall St. doesn’t want their boat rocked, because, their boat, is a 94 ft. yacht. They are pure free tradin’ capitalists as long as the money rolls in and whether China was cheating on trade was irrelevant. They were wrapped up in the purity of Free Trade and Capitalism. Now, different story; they are whining for a Socialist scenario to bail their a$$e$ out.
The GOP should hold out on any plan. A deal was probably made years ago when the RATs decided to shake down Wall Street to give people who never worked for, or deserved a mortgage, that, if, and when, the sh*t hit the fan, they would get bailed out.
heh, it just, ahem, happened like 30 days before an election. Does not matter to Wall Street types. They were promised a bailout, money is the be all and end all, and now they demand their bailout.
US citizens get screwed for this. Makes me physically ill.
The fed changes ratio values and frees $. The Bush/Pelosi ticket borrow it from foreign governments or command the Fed to print it.
I don’t remember hearing it about Bush, but lots of people around here thought Clinton would suspend the election and arrest us all. Remember the posts where “someone’s brother’s uncle’s boss” saw the lots with all the white vans, that had shackles in them!!! Clinton was going declare martial law and make himself our ruler forever, so some blather.
In other words this was a ploy to throw the election by Paulson?
The timing of this whole load of crap is suspicious. Why the end of the world as we know it now if Congress doesn’t take drastic measures.
Who the hell cares?
Have you looked at the Mayan calendar?
>>The bailout isnt limited to real estate either.
Pssst. Hey bud, wanna buy some slightly used carbon credits in excellent condition?
I am more convinced the more I think about it that it was a ploy by Paulson/Pelosi/Reid to throw the election to Obama and make sure they kept the House and Senate. It is the only thing that makes sense and the worst part is that Bush has gone right along with it.
I agree with the people that say we need oversight of the Fed but I don’t think the current leadership of Congress does.
Bush needs to fire Paulson immediately. He is also the person who linked the GOP House plan to Obama before the meeting with Bush.
So are you saying that W is in Barry’s camp, too?
I agree. I mean this “crisis” just so happened a month before the election. I just don’t get what Bush is up to. It would be nice to fire Paulson but I just don’t see that happening.
It makes me sick to see this power grab. The only thing that is good is that maybe just maybe the dems overplayed their hand again and the truth will come out before the elections.
....but, but, but....don’t we still have 4 years left?
What I am saying that he didn’t mind the GOP losing control of the House and Senate in 2006. Appointed Paulson at the urging of Schumer. Paulson hires two Obama supporters as his chief assistants. Not a peep out of the WH.
He doesn’t like McCain and word I got along with others about the meeting is that Bush sided with Paulson, Obama, and the Dems. McCain had to call Bush to urge the meeting after the Bush Press Secretary said he would think about it but make no commitment. Then we find out that Obama had been given the House GOP plan by Paulson and when he took over the meeting, Boehner went ballistic. It was a set up and if the President wasn’t part of it then he is not in control of his own Administration.
Not sure he would mind seeing a Dem replace him just like his Dad didn’t mind Clinton. Too much research from some very reliable sources point in that direction.
Cannot believe I am saying that after supporting him for four elections. Do you remember his enthusiastic support for Gov Palin? I sure don’t. At fundraisers for the RNC, he is not enthusiastic for our team — first hand knowledge of that. Found out earlier Bush and Cheney were pushing Romney starting in June for VP.
Something smells about all of this and it keeps leading right back to the WH. Guess in Court, I would call it circumstantial evidence. One more thing my Congressman a Bush loyalist keeps saying it makes no difference who wins as long as we make a good showing in the House and keep it close. Heard today from two sources he also said if Obama wins, he will run JC Watts for Governor at three different venues. Did I forget to say he is head of NRCC and a ‘supposed’ Republican?
Am either way off or this was all a ruse to get McCain and Republicans in the House and Senate.
It’s very discouraging. At the local GOP office today to pick up some signs, there were a few other conservatives there giving the staff Hell. The Republicans just don’t have the guts to stand up and fight. Even with Palin on the ticket, I’m still debating whether to hold my nose for McCain.
Are you talking to me?
