STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - The man who announces the Nobel Prize in literature says the United States is too "insular" and ignorant to compete with Europe when it comes to great writing.

In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Horace Engdahl said Tuesday that "Europe still is the center of the literary world."

"Of course there is powerful literature in all big cultures, but you can't get away from the fact that Europe still is the center of the literary world . . ."

Sounds like someone is being intolerant of Third World cultures. Muslims all over the world should protest.

With their long record of wars on their continent, abusing their continent in other ways etc. we can say that Europe ceased to exist long ago.

Soon they won’t be writing anything, or reading anything but the koran. Think I’d rather be insular.

So says the man from an organization which has given the Nobel in Literature to such "ignorant" Americans as:

Pearl Buck
Issac Singer
Saul Bellow
John Steinbeck
Ernest Hemmingway
Toni Morrison
Joseph Brodsky
William Faulkner
Eugene O'Neil
To name a few.

I have absolutely no respect for the Nobel prize in anything. It is nothing but an echo chamber for every left wing hack job that comes down the pike. When they chose Jimuh carter it just proved my point that the first qualification for it was senility.

If I was ever nominated (not even a chance!) I’d turn the “honor” down. Who’d want to be ranked with Jimmah Carter, Yasser Arafat, Al Gore and...Toni Morrison? Nobel Prizes are now handed out as pats on the head for Marxist political activism.

I hear ya.. most of the members of the sewdish academy are european, btw.

While a big chunk of man’s great creations have arisen in Europe over the years, to claim this high ground looks like they are a bunch of doddering effete elites... but consider who they have rewarded of late.

They’re cocktail and dinner partied out perhaps.. elitism does that to folk.

Too bad, I wouldn’t mind the bling that goes with a
Nobel myself... but we’re just a bunch of hayseeds, yaknow.

Leapin’Lizards. Every day the greatest work of fiction is created right here in the Good Ole USA. They call it the Grey Lady, or the New York Times, or that fu###in’ rag. These yourpeons are so self-centered.

As Raymond Chandler once wrote: “Good critical writing is measured by the perception and evaluation of the subject; bad critical writing by the necessity of maintaining the professional standing of the critic.”

Apparently, after evaluating all of American literature, our output is defacto classified as “insular” - as we are American, hence divided from the great world “out there”. Tidy, isn’t he? Can anybody name one Irish or French literary masterpiece produced in the last two years?

Yeah, they had the guy who “Mein Kampf” and the guy who wrote “Das Kapital.” I mean they've always been light years ahead of the rubes in the US. // Sarcasm off//
