Iowa Senator Tom Harkins lead over Republican challenger Jack Reed has dropped 10 points this month, but he is still poised to handily win his bid for re-election in November.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the Hawkeye State finds Harkin ahead 54% to 40%. This is the incumbents smallest lead since tracking of the race began in June.
Last month, Harkin led 58% to 34%. He is currently seeking his fifth term in the Senate. In his last re-election bid, Harkin beat his Republican opponent, Greg Ganske, 54% to 44%. Reed is a Navy veteran and businessman.

ah, yup.
The people of IA and their candidate Harkin are two reasons why America is a near lost cause. That’s strong language, but Lenin said the nation will fall from within.
voters put the same tired pigs back in office.
....and expect different results.
“Republican challenger Jack Reed”
Sigh.....
It’s Christopher Reed, not Jack.
little tommy harkin is a gutless coward afraid of going on local radio stations where they might ask him a real question.
But since the little drama queen has the lib msm carrying his water, he gets away with it. I am not sure I have ever even heard him asked a single question that wasn’t a softball. But give him a friendly news crew and you’d think he actually had b*lls.
I think he actually has home in the United States now ...
What is wrong with Iowa? Why are they so different from Kansas, the Dakotas and downstate Illinois? There has to be a demographic change going on there.
Unfortunately I don’t think Chris Reed is getting much help from the Republicans. The only yard sign I’ve seen for him is in our yard. The reason we had that was that we went to a shooting event Saturday, about 60 or so folk in attendance, and Chris was there with signs and such. He seemed like a really nice, likely guy. Unfortunately I don’t think he’ll win but perhaps this will get him some visibility for a political future.
Personally, any wanna-be senator who shows up at an AR-15 shooting day is ok with me. He’ll have my vote.
You would be surprised. Eastern Iowa, especially Johnson county where the University of Iowa is, is probably as liberal as San Francisco. Harkin has done little if any advertising and Reed has 0 dollars. I’m surprised its that close..would love to see Tommy go. He is nothing but an ongoing embarrassment to Iowans...but I’m afraid the POS will still be around after November.
Harkin is a longtime communist sympathizer and liar. He lied about serving in Vietnam - didn’t. Lied about the conditions at Con Son Island prison in So. Vietnam. Helped the communists in El Salvador and Nicaragua. Worked with the marxist/communist funded Institute for Policy Studies (See: Stephen Powell’s “Cover Cadre” book).
Sponsored Soviet “peace fronts” and many fronts of the CPUSA and some of the Trots - SWP.
He is hardcore red and the people of Iowa are too stupid to realize it, until it will be too late.
Didn’t he lie about being a fighter pilot in Vietnam too?
I have loathed him since the great Bob Dornan said when they were on a trip to China, Harkin took off his hat and bowed to a picture of Mao. When he got elected to the Senate even after that, I knew IA was going down the drain and America was probably following.
Still it is surprising this underfunded and not very well known opponent is getting 40%. Maybe if President Obama screws up badly enough then the next several election cycles will be good ones for Republicans, and Harkin will finally be dumped next time. Thirty years in the Senate will be more than enough!
You say this while electing Cuckoonich back to Congress every two years.
besides corn, the other main crop is Leftists
If true, the people of Iowa are simply brain dead.
Oh, did I just write something that might be considered politically incorrect? Well too damn bad!
If the people in Iowa continue to vote this jackass into office, they are brain dead!
I'm normally opposed to term limits because voting is the ultimate term limit. But enough is enough. These career politicians have got to go. There should be 12-year term limits - TOPS - on all elected federal officials. Let Senators serve a single 12-year term and that's it.
Is this the same Harkin who lied about his military experience? Honestly, the people of Iowa should be ashamed of themselves. The sheeple of Iowa have the same plantation mentality as the black community. Nothing changes. Keep voting the same way. Nothing changes.
remember ol’ bob dope? 1996.
rino.
spent as freely as the democrats. helped spend the social security surplus.
Harkin claimed to be a fighter/bomber pilot who served in Vietnam. Lie. He was a plane-transport pilot and there is no record of him ever having been in Vietnam while in the service.
He did go with a group of communist sympathizers and dupes to Con Son Island in 1970 and claimed that the VC were being tortured and living in “tiger cages.”
Rep. Phil Crane, in a July, 1970 edition of “Human Events” showed his trip photos of the prison and showed how Harking, Don Luce (admitted VC supporter), Rep. Augustus Hawkings (D-Ca, and Ex CPUSA member), and several others lied about what they saw or were told.
Today, if Harkin made the claim that he served in Vietnam, he could be federally prosecuted under the “Stolen Valor Act” but it did not exist back in the 70’s.
He is one of the top Democratic traitors in Congress and his record of support for communist causes is long and serious.
The Republican Party in Iowa is in my opinion a disaster. For the past few election cycles including the Governors race, they cant put up a candidate and get the job done.
In the Des Moines Register on 9/26, it stated that Reed only had 12,000 dollars in contributions!
Obviously no one knows much about the guy, and you would think given Harkins far left stances that if the republicans were organized and had a decent candidate they could get rid of Harkin. Basically, the 40% for Reed are those like me who think Harkin is an embarrassment to the people of Iowa. He is exactly what is wrong with Washington. He is worth 20 million dollars, has a nice pension and hardly is ever in the State.
