Gov. Sarah Palin has lost control of her public image, several top-level McCain advisers said this weekend, and even a baseline performance in Thursday's debate with Joe Biden may be too late to recover it.
The decision to sequester Palin from the national political press corps was made with the assumption that the afterglow from her convention speech would last; a month later, even some Republicans are beginning to have a less favorable opinion of her.
Her knowledge of policy has seemed at times no more than inch deep, and even admirers have complained that her penchant for returning to talking points sounds artificial. Several times the campaign has had to clean up her remarks for her, such as on Saturday, when she hinted at a view of U.S.-Pakistani relations that was closer to Barack Obama's.
Aides questioned why CBS's Katie Couric was given a second interview with Palin after Palin's responses were ridiculed.
One McCain aide complained that too few surrogates are making the affirmative case for her -- she has defenders, to be sure, but they're sparse and they're generally defending her from specific charges. Aside from a single interview with Sean Hannity, she hasn't appeared on a single talk radio show, hasn't held a single conference call with conservative activists, nor she has participated in a telephone call with conservative bloggers. In turn, these conservatives have largely stopped rallying to her defense.

Instead of unsheathing Palin, the strategy this week is to attack Joe Biden and try to drive a wedge between him and Obama, another McCain aide said.

"These are not the droids we're looking for."
“She needs to gaze over at Joe and shout Stand up Joe, and then apologize saying, sorry, youre such a runt I couldnt tell if you were standing or sitting”
Sarah Palin has more class than that.
Now, a SMART woman would say, “Joe, I understand you also had a son ready to go into the military”.

Exactly and why Davis and Schmidt have joined Palin and dumped the Bush people that came to the campaign to help her out. With help like that who needs enemies. I learned recently that there was a meeting between Cheney, Bush, Romney and his people in June to pressure Sen McCain to put Romney on the ticket. That is why the full court press to have Romney as VP from media people and polls showing he was the choice when he couldn't even get those votes as a candidate. It failed so their backup plan IMHO has been to try and take her out which is failing.
Have zero respect left for Bush and this Administration who has done but backstab Republicans except for a few for the last two years since he welcomed the Dems to power the night of the election. His appointment of Paulson from Goldman Sachs who is a good friend of Schumer spoke volumes that he was setting it up for Hillary IMHO. been doing a lot of research back to the last few years of Nixon and what I have found is troubling. The same people controlling everything.
The McCain campaign is doing a postively dreadful job of handling just about every aspect of the campaign, except for nominating Sarah.
Let Palin be Palin. No one expects her to be a foreign policy maven. They just want her to be genuine, passionate, smart and tough: the way she first appeared before the Handlers sunk their talons into her.
Precisely.
It’s what worked for RR.
A few well-timed “Well...there you go again”s would do wonders.
And there’s nothing wrong with an “I don’t know but I’m going to find out.”
And if the attack dogs persist, a sarcastic remark about how well things are going since THE OTHER SIDE HAS BEEN IN CHARGE, with references to the role the Dims have played in the financial mess would help.
The Pubbies need to STOP SUGAR COATING IT and TAKE THE FIGHT TO THEM!
Amen, Andy!
Baloney.
FYI, Jeff!

They are SO TRANSPARENT!
THIS from mccain top level advisors?!! With friends like these...we don't need enemies.

Case in point, Kathleen Parker, who’s a hard core Romneybot, and is now trying to help push Governor Palin off the ticket with those backstabbing articles on NRO, which the MSM is eating up.
Reading within the Atlantic-speak: the campaign has tried to present Sarah as a woman- not a conservative woman.
This is typical “move to the middle” post-convention strategy.
But she can’t be strong hiding her true self, and a weak woman is not attractive to voters.
I hope she’s haughty, even snooty, at the debate. Gwen and Joe are beneath her.
Ordinary Americans identify with Palin, and she is the campaign's best bet for success among people who are not influenced by the late-night talk shows and comedians.
Nope. You are quite incorrect. The campaign has mismanaged her schedule and her appearances. They can do much, much better.
According to “The Corner” Palin will call in to Rush today... hasn’t happened yet, though and we’re half way through.
Bingo.
Oh, okay! :-D
They need to get rid of some of these high "thinkers" and just let Sarah be Sarah.
