Palin stumps at cheesesteak shop in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA—Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin takes her cheesesteak with Cheese Whiz and onions.

The Republican vice presidential candidate made a brief campaign stop at Tony Luke's steak shop in South Philadelphia on Saturday evening. Wearing jeans and a beige raincoat, Palin greeted curious onlookers, signed autographs and posed for pictures before ordering two steaks to go.

"Sarah, your steak is ready," a cashier said over the loudspeaker a few minutes after she ordered.

As dozens of onlookers crowded around her, Palin headed back to the window to pick up the order. The cashier told her the order was on the house, so Palin tossed her cash into a donation jar outside the window. A smiling Palin signed autographs on scraps of paper at the window while she waited.

"Thank you so much for letting me stop in," she said before picking up the bags and heading back to her SUV with 14-year-old daughter Willow at her side.

Ordering cheesesteaks at a Philadelphia steak shop is a longtime tradition in the City of Brotherly Love, where the sandwich is a cultural icon.

Palin said she thinks Arizona Sen. John McCain was "awesome" and "absolutely on his game" in Friday night's presidential debate with Democratic Sen. Barack Obama. Both candidates have been campaigning heavily in Pennsylvania, expected to be a key battleground in the November election.

One undecided voter at Saturday's stop said she was charmed after a brief talk with Palin, and more inclined to vote for McCain. Shannon Sampere, 24, of Newark, Del., said she and Palin talked about good bakeries in the area, adding that she found her to be very down to earth.

"She's a very genuine person," Sampere said.

“FedEx wouldn’t work the grease would soak thru the box!! That’s how you know it’s quality! If you try and carry one in a paper bag the grease stains will take up the whole side of the bag!!! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Cheesesteak”

Ok then.

I’ll load up my SUV with some St. Louis toasted ravioli, some Steak n Shake and White Castle hamburgers, and meet you at the Ohio/Indiana stateline.....

Has anyone seen comments from the foreign dignitaries’ impressions of Gov.Palin as they met her in New York? She was off limits to reporters but they were not. Does anyone have any articles from papers abroad?

If I understand correctly, you just don’t order it with Swiss cheese. What else do I need to know? I don’t want to seem like a dolt in front of my kids.

Someone on another thread said she was wearing a Sarahcuda T-shirt. I guess this confirms it.

It’s not that JFK likes swiss; rather its his pretension in pretending be be like one of the masses he detests and he can’t even pull that off without his elitism oozing out like cheese-wiz.

The Ultimate Cheesesteak: Mama's Pizzeria, Bala Cynwyd, Pa.

Don't even bother arguing. I will brook no dissent. The supremacy of the Mama's steak (onions, wit') is not my opinion; it is a matter of cold, scientific fact. Eat one and be haunted for a lifetime by memories of man's most perfect sandwich.

I don’t think swiss is one of the choices...It depends on where you go and what your preferences are. Some places have Cheese Wiz and some don’t. I personally like mine WIT Onions and (Sharp) Provolone cheese. You can get one with various other toppings depending on your tastes. Sometimes I get hot/sweet peppers if the place has them. Just read the sign make sure you know your order before getting to the window. No Worries....

I think McCain-Palin is going to get a lot more votes in Philly than most national Republicans do....

Is that the wonderful shop that has the “Order in English” sign?

Nope. That would be Genos.

Section 21, row 4 seats 3-8. That is where my husband grew up. Then he married me and that is where my children grew up. We have had the tickets in our family since the year before Bobby Clarke. There are so many memories of being in that place. I can’t believe they are going to knock it down.

Man, I love Tony Luke’s! It’s been a few years since I’ve been to Philly, but I visited there often in the 1990s and always tried to hit Tony Luke’s when I was in town. That’s real American food for real Americans. Obambi would look totally out of place at such a non-metrosexual dining establishment. But Sarah would fit right in!

Great memories you bring up with the Spectrum. I remember the Daigneault goal as I was in Boston at the time going nuts in a bar at Fanueil Hall. Hard to believe it was over 20 years ago!

How about those Fightin's!!

LOL!

The best we can do here in Atlanta is The Mad Italian or Philly Connection. The Connection imports (or did import) their buns. I always get mine with onions. Yum!

They're not UNDULY greasy -- of course, speaking from the home of Southern Fried Everything, what do I know?

And where does a "grinder" fit in the scheme of things?

I went to college in Jersey, but good heavens that was 31 years ago!
