Few advisers in John McCain's inner circle inspire more loyalty from him than campaign manager Rick Davis. McCain and his wife, Cindy, credit the shrewd, and sometimes volatile, Republican insider with rescuing the campaign last year when it was out of money and on the verge of collapse. As a result, McCain has always defended himeven when faced with tough questions about the foreign lobbying clients of Davis's high-powered consulting firm. "Rick is a friend, and I trust him," McCain told NEWSWEEK last year.
Last week, though, McCain's trust in Davis was tested again amid disclosures that Freddie Mac, the troubled mortgage giant that was recently placed under federal conservatorship, paid his campaign manager's firm $15,000 a month between 2006 and August 2008.

Looks like the MSM is hot on the trail of the cause of the financial meltdown: Republicans!
Give me a break!!!! These two morons are clueless. Geesh! No wonder the best they can do in life is work for Newsweak!
Lies and damned lies
This was debunked when the NYSlimes reported it, so now Newsweak will give it a try.
Amazing, that fact that the media is looking at Davis because McCain campaign pointed out the Obama conflict of interest.
Move along, nothing to see here.
Newsweek has been in the tank a LONG time.
And where is the report that Obama’s campaign has directly received over $48.000 per year from Fannie Mae? Newsweek is straining at a gnat and swallowing a donkey. If we are going to compare the money that campaign advisers have received, Obama’s adviser Franklin Delano Raines received over $90M in six years.
Remarkably, the $126,000 in Fannie Mae donations to the Obama campaign go completely unmentioned.
This is really getting tedious. The only thing that was missing from this story was an Obama voiceover telling us that he approves of it.
What else was missing is tha fact that Davis has been on a leave of absence from the firm and is not drawing any salary or compensation.
I’ll give you credit girl, you’re consistent.......against McCain. LOL
Isikoff proves himself to be a joke once again.
Yep and “deregulation” is how the Republicans caused this mess.
Call the McCain truth squad./s
With all the ties between the Democrats and Freddi and Fannie and this is the best that Newsweak can come up with?
Yeah, Freddie paid McCain’s campaign manager’s FIRM, so much money. Probably paid his cousin’s, mother in law’s, neighbor, some money too...oh no!
HOW many MILLIONS of dollars did Obama Campagin employees, Jim Johnson and Frank Raines, former CEO’s of FANNIE MAE get when they left the troubled financial giant? Did they answer that question? Did they answer why Obama got 5X more money: $500,000 from Fannie Mae?
Just leftist democratic propaganda.
And so was Frank Raines, who also works for Obama.
Funny how you can tell from the thread title that it is from an MSM source. No MSM headline would ever knit Obama’s brow.
Regurgitated old news. Posted and debunked days ago but somehow I think you knew that.
It’s amazing. There are people on FR who never post anything about Obama, just about McCain, Rudy, and Lieberman. I sometimes wonder what they are up to.
Top Recipients of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Campaign Contributions:
1. Dodd, Christopher D-CT $133,900
2. Kerry, John D-MA $111,000
3. Obama, Barack D-IL $105,849
4. Clinton, Hillary D-NY $75,550
They won’t report this, will they?
