At 94, Jack LaLanne still practices what he preaches

ARLINGTON — He opened the jacket of his suit and braced himself.

"Hit me," he said.

What?

"Go on, hit me!" he insisted, his voice a mock growl.

It’s not every day one is invited — instructed — to slug a man in the stomach on his 94th birthday, but then there is only one Jack LaLanne, the godfather of American fitness.

Still remarkably fit, the tireless evangelist for preventive health celebrated his birthday Friday at the Arlington Convention Center, where he spoke at a wellness conference presented by the Parker College of Chiropractic.

Practicing what he preaches, LaLanne declined a slice of the cake.

His wife, Elaine, confirmed that he hasn’t eaten a sugary dessert in 50 years.

"I don’t give a damn how long I live," LaLanne said about age, "but I want to live while I’m living."

Then he recited one of his favorite aphorisms.

"If man made it, don’t eat it," LaLanne advised.

He listed some of the enemies.

"Cakes. Pies. Candy. Ice cream. Soda pop. All that [expletive]."

A former sugarholic and junk-food addict, LaLanne changed his lifestyle at age 15 after hearing nutritionist Paul Bragg speak about the benefits of exercise and proper diet. The teen concentrated on bodybuilding and weightlifting and studied a medical textbook, Henry Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body.

LaLanne opened the country’s first modern health studio in 1936 in Oakland.

His gym grew into a chain of fitness clubs that he eventually licensed to Bally Co., which renamed them Bally Total Fitness.

LaLanne also originated television’s first workout program, the Jack LaLanne Show.

Seems Houdini did that one once ... once too often.

Jack may want to just stick to juicing his fruits & veggies & counting his cash.

Good on Jack. It's getting so I can't go to the grocery store anymore because of all the fat people waddling around. How so many people let themselves get so fat astounds me.

So much for taking care of "the temple".

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body," (1 Cor. 6:19-20).

"but I want to live while I’m living."

The “father” of the Atkins style diet (1950’s). (p.s. He was right all along, and everyone ignored him)

I have a morning work out too. Every morning when I wake up, it's up, down, up, down, 10 times! Then I do the same with my other eye lid.

My kids just got that Wii Fit game. We’ve been playing it, and man am I sore. I’m 39, in very good shape, but that thing makes you work pretty hard, and really you’re just standing there. Neat invention.

"I can’t afford to die," LaLanne said. "It would hurt my image."

>

"In fact, he claimed they have sex nearly every day.
"Nearly on Monday," LaLanne joked. "Nearly on Tuesday ....""

I am a personal fitness trainer — got my ACE certification the age of 52. Jack has always been my greatest inspiration! I still remember my mom exercising to his program in the very early 60s.

I recommend the WII boxing program to my clients who hate the treadmill. It works very well!

I’d love to have him stop by my school and show them what a “tough guy” really is.

Two great aphorisms: “Live while you’re living,” and “If man made it, don’t eat it.”

"but I want to live while I’m living."

I remember Jack, when I was kneehigh to a tadpole, even back then, I looked up to him with respect and adulation.
Young adults today don't have many mentors to look up to. In my eyes...Jack meets the criteria.
