Xinhua ^

Excerpt -

Chinese taikonaut Zhai Zhigang slipped out of the orbital module of Shenzhou-7 Saturday afternoon, starting China's first spacewalk or extravehicular activity (EVA) in the outer space.

"Shenzhou-7 is now outside the spacecraft. I feel well. I am here greeting the Chinese people and people of the whole world," the taikonaut reported to the ground control in Beijing, where Chinese President Hu Jintao watched the proceedings with country's top space scientists.

Donning a 4-million-U.S.dollar homemade Feitian space suit, Zhai waved to the camera mounted on the service module after pulling himself out of the capsule in a head-out-first position at 4:43 p.m. (0843 GMT), video monitor at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center (BACC) showed.

As I recall, seemed like we watched the first spacewalk about 43 years ago when I was in 4th grade.

I was thinking about the same thing when I heard Hussein speak of the great menace posed by the fact that the Chinese "just had an astronaut walk in space". I thought it was one of the few times McCain left some money on the table by not reminding Obama that we had first done that in '65.

When you consider we will be dependent on the Soyuz for a taxi to the ISS when the shuttle shuts down, the Chinese are getting there, the Russians are getting there, and we're thumbing a ride. Hmmmm.

I don’t think the Chinese Government has been on solid ground since 1949.

Yes, verified days ago when the Chinese published a transcript of a conversation with one of their astronauts.

I know it should have been “taikonauts” but “Chinese take-out-nauts” some how just doesn’t work.

It's a good point. However, NASA is worried that China will get to the moon before the US returns to it. One would think that a nation that has already been to the moon shouldn't be worried about a nation who has never been there. So, their space walk does demonstrate that China has the determination and ability to have a presence in space and someday be as prolific as the US.
