The Barack Obama campaign is asking Missouri law enforcement to target anyone who lies or runs a misleading TV ad during the presidential campaign.

Just FYI for others - not trying to be snarky!
How about if the Obama campaign cracks down on misleading debate performances, meaning his.
Dissent vill not be tolerated!!!!!!!
Truth squad, death squad....what’s in a name?
First Ammendment, anyone?
By the way, why are libel and slander illegal? I mean, what am I harming when I slander Obama? His reputation? Obama’s reputation is not his property. What gives him claim on ideas in other people’s heads? (That’s my libertarian rant for the day.)
BARACK OBAMA IS A MUSLIM bumper sticker - will that land you in jail in Missouri?

Further down the first page is a special bumper sticker I put together (selling at cost for single orders) for Missourians (or others) who wish to put it on their cars, and fight this issue... For more info. and to see the bumper sticker; click on the the link below and it will bring you to my post on DFU's thread.
Obama is a Muslim(?) - Obama's "Truth Squad" = American S.S. = Heil Obama - Goodbye Free Speech
Since when do libertarians not believe in libel and slander laws? Have things changed that much since I left the LP 6 years ago?
What if it is the Obama Campaign that is lying?
how about this......
BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA IS A MARXIST MUSLIM!!!
there I said it!!! you gonna put me in jail???
I dare you!!!
The DNC is turning into a sub-cult of Scientology.
I should’ve added: There’s a difference between THINKING something and saying something with malicious intent (libel), or publishing lies with malicioius intent (slander).
Now, in this particular case, in looking at the actual laws on the books in Missouri, Obama has no grounds to do this - and a VERY tough time even suing for libel or slander as a public figure running for election... :-)
Also, there are laws that this may violate in regards to elected and appointed state officials and officers of the court acting as an official part of an electoral campaign, but that’s separate from these speech issues anyway (well, for the most part they are).
That’s what I was saying throughout the debate last night every time he lied...
Someone needs to call the Missouri Truth Squad on Obama because his lies were broadcast on EVERY station in the entire STATE last night! ;)
Even though it’s clearly a naked attempt at intimidation, when you watch the story, it’s really about a bunch of Democrat prosecutors and sheriffs who will go on TV to “tell the truth” about the Messiah. Shame on the POS Democrat-run station for treating this as if it were a legit news story. This should be grist for the FOX news mill, and I think that there will be a backlash in Missouri, especially with Obama ads like the “Limbaugh and McCain are anti-Hispanic Racists” running. Sounds like some St. Louis area station.
So Obama is pulling out of the campaign in Missouri?
Libel and slander are lies told with malicious intent. You do believe that one has a right to protection from those who would do one harm, don’t you?
“Since when do libertarians not believe in libel and slander laws? Have things changed that much since I left the LP 6 years ago?”
I’m not a member of the party, so I have no idea what they belive in, except in broad strokes. But I remember reading the jist of what I said in a Lysander Spooner book, I think. Or maybe it was someone else. Anyway, it makes sense to me. On a theoretical level, how can you own other people’s thoughts? On a practical level, how can you make sure the public only believes things about a person that are true? If you want to combat vicious lies, I say fight fire with fire, not fire with lawsuits.
