Please refer me to a link where McCain has stated whether he supports the President’s proposal or the house republican proposal. I have seen Senators Shelby and Bunning come out against the president. I have not seen or heard John McCain join them. If he has please provide the link. This blind revisionist hero worship and spinning of John McCain has got to stop. John “Country First” McCain is the same guy that brought us Amnesty and CFR while voting against the Bush tax cuts. The same guy that called Rumsfeld the worst Sec Def in US history. So please stop pretending that he’s the standard bearer for GOP principles.

McCain should say that at this time of crisis, we should change the subject of the debate to the topic of interest today, the economy and the current market meltdown that's being addressed in Washington. The people need to hear what was happening yesterday in Washington from the people who were there and want to assume the responsibility of dealing with it.

What? Obama has been holed up in Tampa studying for the wrong test?

What? The MSM have had their researchers crafting "gothcha's" around foriegn policy for McCain and can't possibly moderate a debate on the economy on such short notice?

I think McCain now needs to demand that the debate be about the economy, the financial health of the country, and what's going in in DC today. I think the candidates need to demonstrate how they can act extemporaneously in the heat of a crisis.

Don’t worry. I really do think it’s your bad mood. No matter what McCain does, the MSM is going to go into a swoon about how awful it is. So, he can set his agenda as he sees fit. I personally think he’ll do just fine. It also shows that despite his age, he can keep up the pace and multi-task well. He should bring his 96-year-old mother just to remind people what good genes he has.

McCain will return after the debate to complete solving the biggest problem since the greate depression.

Obama will remain “on call if needed”.

Does anyone think the contrast will be lost on voters?

McCain will spend his time talking as an insider, explaining what they are doing in Washington. Why Bush’s plan was a bad plan, how it fell through because Bush & the Democrats crafted a plan WITHOUT input from Senate or House Republicans (which will untie him from Bush in voter’s minds), and talk about what is going on to find a solution.

Obama will say he has been in contact with Sen. Reid and Nancy Pelosi. He will not only look like an outsider, he will come across for what he is, a 1st term senator that “inside power brokers” in his own party neither respect or listen to.

I’m sure the first line out of Obama’s mouth will be “McCain is politiciing the process.” Easy reply: “Both of us are sitting US Senators. It is our JOB to be in Washington working to solve this problem. If Senator Obama wants to ignore his duty as a Senator he is free to do so, I will not ignore my duty.”

I just don’t see this as a move from fear on McCain’s part. He went to Washington, because he was called, because he IS a Senator, and because he believed it was important. The situation in DC is certainly viewed very differently today, than it was earlier on this week, lol, heck, we FReepers have something new to get outraged over every durn day.
So, for McCain to regroup now that the Republican leadership in the House has found it’s voice, so to speak ;}, is understandable. McCain knows that true leadership involves more than doing it all yourself. You must be able to move people in the right direction, AND inspire action, and initiative in others.

So far, so good.

Read McCain’s statement at NRO on the Corner. It lays down his principles consistent with the House GOP position. He is getting on the right side of this issue.

His people are not idiots.

I agree 100%. Mac needs to throw Øbama's memorized script under the bus, so the country will see LIVE just how Øbama falls apart under pressure. The country will see Øbama going down in flames without his Teleprompter.

"McCain actually said he was suspending his campaign and delaying the debate: “until we have taken action to address this crisis”."

Is that enough for you? Seriously doesn't that come off as DC speak for "we're gonna talk and when we finish talking we'll be in the same place we were when we began". Why suspend your campaign and ask your opponent to delay the debate so you can "address" and not solve a crisis? Has John's "addressing" moved the debate any closer to resolution? Is his campaign still suspended since there isn't a resolution or is it back on since he addressed it? See how silly this stunt makes him look?

With less than 10 hours until the debate was scheduled to start, the McCain campaign announced that the Arizona senator would travel to the University of Mississippi. The campaign said that afterward McCain would fly back to Washington to continue working on the economic crisis.

The campaign’s statement said McCain is optimistic that there has been progress toward a bipartisan agreement. But earlier in the week, McCain said he would delay the debate “until we have taken action to address this crisis.”

“He is optimistic that there has been significant progress toward a bipartisan agreement now that there is a framework for all parties to be represented in negotiations,” the McCain campaign said in a statement.

"Read McCain’s statement at NRO on the Corner."

Read it--not good enough. McCain was so serious about this crisis that he suspended his presidential campaign and flew to DC. If he backed the house republicans he should publicly come before the cameras like Senator Shelby and state his opinion to the American public. You and I know why he hasn't publicly backed Shelby's position--he backs the President's position.

MSM will swoon about how Obama does everything right and McCain does everything wrong. Count on it.

McCain did manage to rile up the DEMS though, esp. Dingy Harry! That was worth the trip right there!

Obama will have in his ear piece and ‘Dick Tracy’ teleprompter wristwatch on receiving his answers and debate talking points from his team behind the screen.

I have a tough time believing that political teams don't have electronic countermeasures to mitigate this kind of thing.

"Why? Did McCain ever say he wasn’t going to debate?"

Well, at the time of his Wednesday announcement that he was suspending his campaign and wanted a postponement of the debate, an aide said that he would not show up for the the debate unless there was a deal to address credit crisis.

"McCain will participate in Friday night’s debate if a bill is passed by Friday morning, his adviser Mark Salter said."

I disagree with this point, blaquebyrd. McCain knows this crisis is too important and a bit too complicated to demand a solution in one or two meetings that would conveniently allow him to attend the debate. IMO, he showed up, put his two cents in, stirred things up, helped the GOP Reps ‘reform’ the bailout if you will, and then he leaves it in their capable hands to finish the deal. He doesn’t have to be there every step of the way. He addressed it and he will continue to be involved but he isn’t presuming that his presence is required for every decision made. That’s playing on a team. That’s leading.

Obama made it clear from the beginning that this little “crisis” was not going to throw off HIS schedule and he would NOT be inconvenienced by it. That’s acting like a little spoiled brat. That’s not leadership.

Ah, you’ve got your facts a little skewed. MCain said he’d suspend his campaign and skip the debates until a resolution on a bail out package was reached. “Debates can wait, this is more important”.

It hasn’t and he’s debating tonight. Now who looks like a moron. It’s coming across as a politcal stunt that didn’t work. He took a gamble that he’d come in as the shining knight to broker a deal, but conservatives in the House (thank God), balked.

I like it. The true situation is that he will take time out from doing critical business for the country to attend the debate where this is just another stop on the Obama campaign. He can throw a few remarks, especially if he appears at all tired, “I know Obama looks well-rested, but I’ve been up for the last 48 hours doing the business of America.”

Like it or not, McCain knows what he believes and can’t be shaken on those things. Obama has to practice and wait for opportunities to use what he’s learned. This will be “Saddleback,” but worse for Obama than that because Obama’a tutoring was interrupted. Then comes the whining.

Listen crap-for-brains,

He said “I would like to see the debate postponed”

Obama said “No”

When they debate tonight and a witless wonder like yourself asks “Why are they debating when the economy is in such a mess?”

the answer is

BECAUSE OBAMA REFUSED TO POSTPONE THE DEBATE!

Go ahead, use the word “courage” sarcastically again when referring to McCain. I dare you.

Thank you! Amen, brother. That’s what I’ve been trying to articulate, but have not done a very good job. If McCain has injected anything into the Financial Bail-out it’s his ego and nothing else.
