Biden Tears Up In Pennsylvania

GREENSBURG, PA — Joe Biden’s emotions got the best of him at a campaign stop in Western Pennsylvania, as he recalled the great kindness done to him and his family by one of the area’s iconic families.

After being introduced by Pittsburgh Steelers owner and Obama supporter Dan Rooney, the VP candidate who wears his heart on his sleeve told how the the scion of that football family helped him out when he was at his lowest.

“Sorry to take your time, but Mr. Rooney reminded me of this, Dan reminded me by just seeing him,” he said — telling the crowd about the car accident in 1972 that killed his wife and daughter and left his sons in serious condition in the hospital.

“They wouldn’t let us have a Christmas tree in, understandably, into the hospital because of concern about fire. So I went to K-mart to get a synthetic tree that would, you know, so I’d be able to bring it in and have something there at Christmas for the kids,” he said. “One of the few times I was away from their bed for a couple hours, I came back and they looked like they had lighted up my Christmas trees.”

“My one boy was in traction, and my other little boy had a fractured skull. And they were happy. They each separately had a football in their bed.”

At this point, Biden looked down and paused for 15 seconds to collect himself. “Excuse me,” he said, wiping his eyes. The crowd applauded.

I’m with you. He’s a human being. People need to show a little Christian mercy and compassion. I don’t care how long ago the tragedy happened or who was at fault, events like that can hit you hard for the rest of your life.

Biden went through hell. I don't think I could have survived it.

I live in Pittsburgh and have met Rocky a few times (most recently at the State (Liquor) Store). He is a great motivational speaker. I don't know his voting record, but he is a rugged individualist. I suspect he thinks conservative, regardless of how he votes.

The Rooneys are Irish Catholics. They may be Democrats, they may not be. When they do things, though, they do them for the right reasons.

A lot of people think that Plaxico and Porter left because they wanted too much money. They were forced to leave because they were talented, but poor sportsmen. Say what you will about the Steelers and the Rooneys, but they respect action over words and tradition over fad. They are sportsmen.

I'm not surprised that Biden’s kid got the football. The Steeler organization puts kids and country first.

Does it matter to you that he DESTROYED the short life and reputation of the truck driver and his family by BS lies which furthered Biden’s career?

The accident occurred on December 18, 1972 in Delaware. I wonder how and why Rocky Bleier sent the footballs. Bleier had just made the Steelers in 1972 after being on the taxi squad when he returned from Vietnam.

The Steelers played the San Diego Chargers on December 17 in San Diego. On December 23rd, they played the Oakland Raiders in Pittsburgh (Immaculate Recepiton) and then played the Dolphins on December 31 oin Pittsburgh and lost.

I have tried to Google the Biden connection to Bleier with a contemperaneous reference but can't find anything. I wonder if this is another fabrication. You can't trust Joe's memory and his abillity to separate reality from fantasy.

There are a lot of times it is appropriate to criticize Biden, but we really shouldn’t put him down for becoming emotional over the memory of a family tragedy.

Comments like those made on this thread make all FReepers look bad, and certainly doesn’t help the McCain/ Palin campaign.

I keep hearing these incessant drive-by assertions that McCain’s health is soooooo bad or Palin is one breath away...

and yet bambi is even less experienced than Palin, while Biden leaves one wondering if he’s had an aneurysm which...as Charlie Rangel accused of Palin...has left him “disabled”.

Biden is an inveterate liar. He can’t help him self. He is like the rooster who claims credit for the sunrise.

At least he has given up the sliming of the dead driver of the other car, falsely accusing him of being drunk. In releated news, just another reason to despise the Pittsburgh Squealers.

Biden isn't a Steelers fan. Biden has openly said he's been a Packers fan all of his life which must go over well with Delaware voters who are by proximity mostly Eagles and to a lesser degree Redskins fans.

Many of us don't believe his emotions are genuine. He is a liar and a panderer. Call me skeptical.

Which is why we need proof readers, and lie detectors and internet searches whenever Bin Biden cries, lies, distorts or plagerises.

Here is Joe a week earlier--just a tear this time This morning, Joe spent more than an hour touring the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He was joined by Joe Horrigan, the Vice-President for Communications for the Hall and Stephen Perry, the President of the Hall.

Joe was filled with emotion when he saw the exhibit on Robert "Rocky" Bleier, who played his rookie season for the Pittsburgh Steelers before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Bleir served in Vietnam, where he received a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Bleir ultimately recovered from his injuries and returned to the NFL. After the car accident of that claimed the life of Joe’s first wife and his young daughter and injured his two sons in 1973, the Steelers flew Bleier to Delaware where he gave a signed football to Biden’s sons while they were recovering at the hospital. As Joe looked at Bleier’s jersey, he appeared to wipe away a tear.

When asked how much of a football fan he was, Biden said "My wife is a die-hard Eagles fan, so we watch every Eagles game."
