For Democratic leaders, it's a striking defeat as they agree to allow expanded offshore drilling in waters they once called sacrosanct, giving Republicans a rare victory on energy policy six weeks before the election.
In a matter of months, Republicans turned offshore oil drilling from a non-issue even one feared as a political liability by many Republicans in Congress into political gold as anger over high gasoline prices made voters receptive to calls for more domestic energy production.
After vowing to protect a quarter-century ban on drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, Democrats on Wednesday moved through the House a stopgap spending bill that allows the offshore drilling moratorium approved each year by Congress for the last 26 years to expire at the end of this month.
"It's a very big step forward," said House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio.
"Democrats have finally recognized the significance of this energy crisis," gloated Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri, the No. 2 ranking Republican.

We won! We won! We won! We won!
YEAY!!
This is the best thing that could’ve happened to our nation!
If true, then this "victory" with the lapse of the offshore ban is a very tainted win if it's even a win at all.
Anyone have more information on this ?
And then hand Congress right back to the GOP. Gas prices will increase again next summer and the noise will be heard again. If the dems don’t do something to get gas flowing and oil pumping then they are out in 2010.
And this victory is buried on page 100 of the local paper...
The RATS were able to loose in silence..due to the current crisis. But they will be back. They will use enviromental laws to block all new leases..or drilling. Just wait. We still need ANWR in the worst way. The whole AK Pipeline may be shut down without the new reserves coming on line.
Palin is now like McCain’s wife. If she’s happy..he’s happy and she want ANWR. So she will convince him, if elected. So we need to vote for Palin.
That is so funny.
Contact your Congress critters to let them that you know the best oil is located in the first 50-mile range, shoreline to 50-mile point.
U. S. House of Representatives
And un-elect all the dimocrats who will not support drilling EVERYWHERE!
McCain could take the lead on the issue by returning the money and then calling on ALL politicians to do likewise.
(gloated Rep. Roy Blunt)
This whole article is written from the perspective of the Democrats...as usual. Nothing is mentioned about that the result was good for the country.
Don't count your chickens before they hatch.
The 'rats are full of trickery. Look for an anti-drilling earmark on any finincial bailout bill tomorrow (two bad moves in one bill, imagine that!). They want to kill this country by any means necessary. It's too bad that we don't have the intestinal fortitude to fight them off.
Don’t celebrate too much. If “the one” gets elected he just reinstates the executive order banning drilling. The victory isn’t complete until McCain take the oath.
Is the ban lifted on ANWR too?
“Is the ban lifted on ANWR too?”
I don’t think so.
What if the Senate doesn’t vote to overturn the ban? Is the ban still in place?
It will take a couple of years to compete everything necessary to offer up the area to companies for leasing. Drilling will not start anytime soon.
