Republican nominee John McCain called today for postponing Friday's presidential debate until the resolution of the financial mess on Wall Street, and even vowed to suspend his campaign to concentrate on finding a solution. A delay could change the dynamics of a campaign that has not gone well for him in the last two weeks. And perhaps McCain hopes the gesture would make him look as if he were putting politics aside amid an emergency.
But altering the debate schedule would hardly serve voters. If anything, debates are most valuable at times of national crisis, because voters need to hear candidates highlight their policy differences.
And while the subject of tomorrow's debate is foreign policy, not economics, the Wall Street crisis casts shadows all around the world. A darkening financial picture inhibits the nation's ability to keep troops abroad, for instance, and alters its relationship with China and major oil nations.
McCain's desire to seize the initiative is understandable, for the meltdown on an ill-regulated Wall Street is the harshest indictment possible of Republican stewardship of the economy. And McCain's initial response to the mess -- his odd claim that the fundamentals of the economy are strong -- made him look out of touch. But if he now thinks the problem can be tidied up during a short break from the campaign trail, he needs some new economic advisers.
McCain has already brought discredit upon his campaign by shielding running mate Sarah Palin from hostile questions. This impulsive new stunt makes him appear unsteady and underprepared, too. America can work through a financial crisis and handle a campaign at the same time.

Barf alert should not be needed here...it's obvious.
This is a serious matter and McCain is a serious candidate.
Who scheduled this debate on a Friday, anyway? I have things to do.
and people to see?
We can now be positive that McCain’s move was the right one. when liberals
start giving us advise we know why.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
I must have missed that part.
But I had a weird dream Palin was hard-ball interviewed by Charlie Gibson, and the press dug into every part of her life to include her minor children's private lives.
These pathetic leftists live in a different reality.
How do you know it’s an editorial, it’s tough to tell anymore.
News Flash: Maybe Sen. McCain is smarter than the editorial writers? Hint: he gets briefings those clowns will never get near. If he thinks the situation is important enough to suspend the debates, then maybe they should stop and think about that.
I won’t hold my breath.
Obama says he would go if he is needed! He never did anything while there anyway except vote PRESENT and collect money from Fanny and Freddy! The best thing he can do is just stay away!
No, Obama, a president needs to be able to prioritize things.
This isn’t like 2 major crisis are going on at once. (Financial meltdown and something else.)
This is just a debate, and McCain is only postponing it.
You, Obama, had 10 chances to debate McCain at townhall meetings.
Conclusion: Obama is used to doing things like voting “present,” so its no surprise that he insists on debating Fri. Obama had a chance to actually bring about change and join McCain in going to wash D.C. but he didn't.
Obama is all talk and no action. He just talks about change. MCain is actually going to do something.
Blah blah blah, I bet these media scum would let a dem prez screw young WH interns and then lie about it under oath, and then make the republicans look bad for upholding the rule of law.
Oh yeah, they did that already. McCain is right, even though the MSM will spin like Linda Blair’s head on pea soup to convince you postponing a debate during a real crisis is a nefarious act.
POSTPONE, you liberal scum. It means you still get your precious debate.
I think McCain might be sandbagging.
He will look like a LEADER for a couple days and go to the debate WITHOUT practice or a TELEPROMPTER and mop the floor with that skinny little dweeb.
Yeah, why should the one person (of the two candidates) who will actually be running things be involved? Snark.
Disgusting!
If Obama doesnt respond likewise, it looks like he doesnt care (or doesnt know anything) about the economy and the American public. If he does what McCain did, it looks like he cant think for himself and has to follow McCains lead in order to look leader-like.
It is not a stunt contact your local media. I’m writing to every media outlet in Virginia tonight with my support for McCain.
McCain is a big man. Obama and his sycophants in the liberal brain dead media are small men, driven by ego and their foolish political agendas. You know they would be perfectly happy if the financial markets seized and the economy circled the drain. Great Depression 2.0? Open up the Cristal and free arugula for everyone!!!!11
John McCain is showing leadership in a time of crisis. He is concerned about more than just winning this campaign. Obama, again, is all about #1. John McCain is going to dominate the news cycle the next couple of days while Obama will be the afterthought.
And, yes, McCain will show up for the debate. He’ll make it at the last minute and fly back as soon as it’s over to DC if needed. That will put to rest whatever ‘multitasking’ retort the media and Dems can conjure up. McCain is the grown up who takes his job as a Senator seriously and he’s the man the nation’s capitol looks to when partisan gridlock can’t get the job done in the midst of a crisis.
Brilliant, brilliant move. I suspect that Obama will find a way back to DC once their campaign realizes that staying away makes their guy look like an egocentric, small coward. There’s no way Obama can afford to miss a vote in the Senate on this. Obama shows up in DC to vote for the work McCain did by suspending his campaign and putting Country First? It looks like it’s coming.
