Republicans in the state Senate are in danger of losing their grip on the majority, according to a new poll, which found that Democratic challengers are closing in on veteran Republican incumbents in two key races.
The Siena College poll released today found that a Republican senator of Queens, Serphin Maltese, who won re-election by a small margin two years ago, is tied with Joseph Addabbo, who is a New York City Council member, in the 15th Senate District race.
Meanwhile in Suffolk County, 82-year-old Republican Caesar Trunzo, who has represented the Third District for more than 30 years, is leading Brookhaven supervisor Brian Foley by six points, the poll said.
Democrats need to pick up two seats this November to seize the majority for the first time in more than four decades.
The poll was conducted between September 11 and September 17. Slightly more than 400 likely registered voters responded in each district poll, with a margin of error of 4.9%.

If NY gets a Democratic state senate, then they can raise taxes so that they’ll be higher than even in California. Not that there’s much gerrymandering damage they can do: the Republicans will probably only have 3 congressional seats.
Poll: DBM digging up crazy Polling numbers to help keep themselves alive.
This would be worse than losing New York Congressmen.
I need a drink. We will lose the Senate, our taxes are going up, business will be regulated to death, and I heard the NY Sun will cease publication next week,
It's like the South in reverse. We wait for the old Dems to die in legislatures to pick up their seats. The Dems wait out the old Republicans in the North.
Not sure it makes much of a difference. Most Republicans in NY are RINOs anyway. Hell, Paterson’s to the right of some of them at this point.
It will be interesting to see how quickly New York rushes downhill. As bizarre as the cooperation of the criminal GOP state senate and criminal Democrat state house has been, one-party government would have a charm all its own.
There is also a Republican seat in TX that includes the area about Bellaire that is in risk of having former gubernatorial candidate Chris Bell (D) take it in a special election on Nov. 4. Several Republican candidates continue to divide up a puny share of the total.
Despite the corruption of Spitzer, Republicans can’t gain any traction at all. In this political climate, Dems can get away with anything.
That's pretty much the modern era. Just look what that little pissant Obamabot did in my state hacking Gov. Palin's personal email... he apparently won't even be CHARGED. I think it's time for a new civil war, long overdue to rid this country of evil and corruption.
This would be losing New York Congressman, maybe all but a couple of them if they control redistricting also a rat senate map would preclude the chance of the GOP ever winning it back. Peter King, they could draw him out. All rat long Island? First time ever?
A conservative seat upstate was lost in 06. The first rat to win the seat (or it’s antecedents) since 1880 (126 years)
The North Staten Island and South Brooklyn seat is rat even though it almost certainly went Bush.
Maltese, it’s great he’s hung on. The Guy Velella seat, gone. The silk stocking seat held by Roy Goodman maybe the worst RINO in the country, gone.
Ah, old Guido, who was my State Senator when I lived in Boogie Down back in the mid-90s. So, how many illegitimate children were there at last count?
A damn shame that City Island, which has the lowest violent crime rate of ANY neighborhood in the city (per NYPD stats) and voted for Bush twice, is stuck in the same district with Co Op City (a project by another name).
Serf’s district has seen a large influx of South Asians, Chinese and middle class/lower middle class Hispanics (particularly from South America), but still has a white Catholic voting majority. Amazing that he has held on, despite the economic populism of many of said district’s inhabitants. If his district is redrawn, it will probably include more of Forest Hills and all of Kew Gardens and Briarwood, making it a solidly Dem seat.
Yeah they could easily draw him out and Golden and mess with the Long Island Senators too.
I first heard of Velella’s illegitimate child when the Fosella story broke. He has several you say? LOL.
It’s no wonder the NYGOP is in such a sorry state with such clowns in charge.
I had never heard of City Island. A Bronx hood for Bush, wow.
How did he do in Riverdale?
To my knowledge, in the Bronx only City Island and Schuylerville (eastern part of Throggs Neck) voted for Bush. What's even more amazing is that way back in 1964, Pelham Bay, Throggs Neck, City Island, and Bedford Park all went for Goldwater.
