John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

My mistake. Didn’t read the post you were responding to. Just assumed it was the other Joe.

The MSM had so many nice things to say about Bush in 2000 and 2004. I guess that is why we had a President
Gore and Kerry, because the media told us too vote for them.

“Obama will look bad if he doesn’t agree, but is going to be ticked that it wasn’t his idea”

His camp already said, “they thought about this earlier in the week and concluded not to call McCain about it.”

I think in the emergency session Congress should first pass McCain’s legislation from 2005.

That will get the message across that the democrats have caused the crisis.

"Major Garrett just reported that Obama called Mccain at 8:30 am EDT today and said lets get together and issue a joint statement on this critical financial problem facing America." Now why would Obama call McCain to issue a joint statement? It just doesn't jive, especially after Obama and Biden have been hitting McCain hard on the economy. I think their claims are BS.

...and Obama will tell the country what his views on the economy are just as soon as McCain gives Obama those views to share! Generous to a fault, that Obama!

Where does Barry get off anyway thinking he calls all the shots? HE won’t agree to townhall debates, HE won’t agree to cancel Friday’s debate, who does he think he is?

This will give her a well needed break to rest and study for the VP debate.

This is just a OODA loop strategy executed to perfection.

LOL! While you were writing this, I was thinking exactly the same thing (see my #781).

McCain announced this he is now at 45% trending down to Obama 54% trending up. I would say the reaction to this was not good.

Intrade is dominated by European leftists. I just got out of lunch with a nice chap form London who is a macroeconomic strategist for a major global financial firm. Supposedly this guy is brilliant, which is why he gets paid millions of dollars a year. But he hadn't a clue about American politics and was completely clueless on why the House members don't want to vote for this. I was like, "Ahh, duh. They face re-election in a month. They have to vote on this and then jump on the plane back to their district, and they'll hear nothing but a month of complaining about the deal from their constituents."

Europe is truly clueless about how American politics works. They always look at things from the perspective of parliamentary democracy rather than a representative republic.

“MSM already calling it a “Hail Mary” and “showboating”.”

They obviously are reading KOS to get thier pre-approved reactions, then.

The one or two INTELLIGENT people over there are getting REAMED for daring to point out that McCain has Obama pigeon-holed.

Off course the MSM will play it that way, and many people get their news from that source only. IMO it was a bad move.

He can show up for the debate, and look like an idiot standing alone at the podium while McCain has his sleeve rolled up in DC trying to solve the country’s problems.

Obama has bigger plan for the bailout.

He will request postpone of the November 4 election so he can work with John McCain on the bailout plan.

You know...one-upmanship?

As another poster said—just send Sarah in to debate Obama! She’ll be just as good if not better with the foreign policy questions due to all the cramming.

Add to this a Zogby poll floating today saying Americans think Obama is smarter and will beat McCain in a debate. I would say the timing was waaaaayyyy off.

He's not even stopping his campaign today, he's stopping it tomorrow afternoon after he gives another campaign speech at some Clinton shindig. The timing is about as bad as it can be. You can't ask for a time-out at the last moment.

If this was so important that he has to miss the debate Friday, then it's more than important enough for him not to give a speech at a Bill Clinton event tomorrow.
