John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

This is like Jimmy Carter refusing to campaign in 1980 because of the Iran Hostage situationJimmy was toast long before that decision. He was widely reviled and had no chance of a second term.

Even better; McCain, Obama, Biden all go back to D.C. leaving Sarah on the campaign trail...it becomes evident that she is the real outsider and the only one who has no part in this mess!

Wow another brilliant aspect of this move...thanks!

"Good Evening, our top story today, Republican Presidential candidate John McCain has suspended his campaign in fear of debating Democrat Presidential candidate Barrack Obama. The new Zogby polling data showed most Americans believed Obama is the smarter of the two and would have easily handled the much older McCain. McCain citing a need to get the economy back on track left for Washington DC to be with his fellow lawmakers.

Questions remain if this was a political stunt designed to get Obama, who is surging in the polls off his track. Obama will respond by doing what is best for this nation either by suspending his campaign or returning to DC. We now go to our political analyst who will champion all the DNC talking points." It's already started. Liberal bloggers are saying:

McCain afraid to sebate Obama

Palin says we're headed for a depression

Maybe he debates Biden?

You mean like how Abraham Lincoln debated Frederick Douglass on YouTube during the War of Jenkin's Ear?

If it was Obama’s idea, why is he saying there’s no need to suspend his campaign or delay the debate??

McCain forte is “Country First”. What is this call to come together for the country if not “Country First”. It is a political move of pure genius since McCain faced no real threat in these debates. All he had to do was hold his own against the stutterer in the domestic policy end and crush him in the FP debate, easily done.

Obama has no choice other then to agree because not agreeing makes him look as if his getting himself elected is more important then solving a major crises facing the Nation.

oooh...that's a great idea. McCain issues a statement saying that's he's helping to implement the economic fix and that he's confident in the judgment and skills of his vp to participate in a political debate with Obama. I would LOVE to see that!

I love that statement. It would be exciting to see the reactions on both sides of the aisle. Obama would likely try to cancel lol :)

Let Palin debate Obama. Prove she can stand in.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Can she do it? Does it matter, but I suspect the answer is, "and how!"

McCain is nothing if not bold and unconventional. I'm not sure if this is a great idea of a really disastrously bad idea, but then again that was my reaction upon first learning that he had picked Sarah Palin (although within an hour I was convinced that it was the most brilliant VP pick in American political history).

We needed a few small miracles to win this election. Obama should be leading by 15 points right now.

The first miracle was Obama messing up over the summer. The second was Sarah Heath Palin. WE NEED ONE MORE !

He'll vote present

There is not way Obama is going to suspend anything and go to DC. By not going is his way of voting "present." This way he won't have to vote and can't be held to anything as he will say he was for it or against it depending on how things shake out. He wants to lead...oh please.

Smacks of Desperation was what many said after the Palin Nomination also.

McCain is a genius, he knows how to run a campaign.

Some posters here think that McCain needs to be out campaigning making sure that the public knows the Dems caused all this.

Wrong. People do not want to hear this. People don’t understand enough follow it, and they don’t want lessons.

While I’m very interested in what caused all this, I am MORE interested in what we are going to do about it now. We are where we are. My husband and I are having conversations about what WE SHOULD DO NEXT. We are looking for information that help us figure out what we need to do to secure our future, NOT WHO TO BLAME AND NOT WHO TO VOTE FOR.

Best thing that could happen -

McCain stops campaigning and turns it over to Sarah for a while.
