John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.
The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.
It is horrible. I can’t understand how people say he’s good at this.
I was tired and zoning out during it but glad people caught the show. He started out VERY badly. Not sure about the McCain misunderstood thingie- I missed that
My gut was he lost this round. McCain and/or his people are MUCH better at being AMerican. Obama and his crew have turned me off more and more and I was willing to give him some slack. That was a while ago...
For who? The government? Surely not for me. The government's buying real property with my money...property I'll never see or have access to. And although some have said the taxpayer will see some of it back, I won't hold my breath, nor will it probably happen in my lifetime, if ever.
I understand McCain’s need to return to his job in the Senate.
It is kind of like a volunteer firefighter ignoring the siren — you just cannot live with yourself if you don’t go.
After watching President Bush’s speech......I don’t think Senator McCain nor Senator Hussein had a choice.....they were TOLD to return to Washington. President Bush wasn’t screwing around....
Interesting move, indeed. From a lead-by-example, country-first perspective, this was the right thing to do.
From a political strategy perspective...hmm...not so sure. It’s either genius or it’s boneheaded; I can’t say which yet. I’m wondering how many people will only pick up that McCain suspended his campaign and asked Obama for a postponement of their debate. That’s probably how the left-wing media will spin it. The crucial details about the reason for the suspension — to put a crisis ahead of a campaign and help with the bailout — and the direct challenge to Obama to do the same, could be lost on many.
I hope that that is not the case. We shall see.
Yeah, you know what, I think you’re right. It was not so much an interesting, “maverick” move on the part of McCain — it was a mandatory directive from Bush.
I have heard no one even mention the debate, other than to say they think McCain would spank Obama badly and that was before the recent financial headlines.
I was really shocked at the college students making the financial mess their big topic of conversation; I went to college during President Carter’s financial mess and I wasn’t interested in the economy and didn’t know any other students that were either. We were much more interested in if we were going to pass a test on Friday or what our weekend plans were.
Looks like a pretty good move.
If Barry doesn’t go back to Washington, he can be slammed for not doing his duty as a Senator. He can no longer claim to be a leader when he refuses to lead.
If Barry does return, he is following McCain’s lead. Not to mention that he is completely ineffective in the Senate so he won’t be leading there either. Meanwhile, Palin is free to campaign against Biden or no one if he returns to DC.
Finally, McCain can always go to the debate. If Barry had a surprise attack on the economy planned, it won’t work since McCain can call him out on not returning. If McCain performs poorly, he has an excuse.

The hell there isn’t a downside. A lot of people are going to think this is to get him out of the debate for now (which is a stupid idea since he should be able to take Obama out easily in a debate). Plus, I hate to say it, but Obama is right: a President needs to know how to multi-task and this makes McCain look silly for suggesting he can’t do his elected job (senator) and run for office when virtually everyone else is doing it.
This is a dumb move on his part. Whether it will cost him, we shall see. And if I’m wrong, so be it — happy to be wrong. But suggestions to the contrary smack more of wishful thinking.
