John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.
The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

I doubt that’s the case this week for the adult population as a whole. Many people have still heard little about the financial crisis, or they pay little attention to details until something actually happens. I know some people who’re furious and some who consider it typical politicians’ rhetoric, and some who’ve given it little thought. It’ll spread to more people each day, and depending on what happens, more and more people will form some opinion in the coming days.
The situation is best served by both candidates being there. Senators not only vote, they engage in negotiation sessions behind close doors. If they are both there and sign on to any agreement no party can hang it around the other.
And without a teleprompter, he wouldn't be a cunning linguist.

I just took a poll in my home...what’s more important the economy or a stupid debate on foreign affairs. 99% for economy and 1% debate..... when polled 99% for and 1% against. 1% is my pet rock!
Yeah, Obama left a message with someone in the McCain campaign, but they saw through what he was trying to do. McCain had no intention of following Obama and Reid.
Again, Obama underestimated McCain. The WSJ says that Obama has no choice but to follow McCain, back to DC.
That's certainly debatable. McCain is doing the right thing on this. What the voters perceive is TBD.

I think xsmommy is right, most people are gravely concerned about the economy right now. My 26 year old daughter has two banks she deals with- a biggie and a small hometown bank and she called me last week to ask me which bank I thought was safer for most of her money to be. Last night I was in a college computer lab where the freshman were supposed to be working on a reading assignment, this is a remedial reading class and all they could talk about was whether or not we are going into a major depression like the 1930s.
Are you for real? It's one thing to say we need to act to eliminate a meltdown but it is antithetical to conservative thought to throw around words like "investment". If the very structural deficiencies that brought this crisis on (90% Dem created) are not dealt with in the final bill (how about if you cannot afford the first month's mortgage then, uhh, no mortgage?) because some need to maintain a debate schedule that can be rescheduled whiel a amazingle far-reaching bill is or is not passed then there is no reasoning left in this country.
If Lieberman jumps to the GOP tonight, McCain will be the majority leader in the morning. That would mean the Republicans control the Senate and Reid is history. It would also mean if there were a 50/50 split on the vote, then Cheney would become the tie breaker. How about this one. If they all voted "present" then they would not be committed on record as voting yae or nay and off the hook. Again, wouldn't Cheney have to vote to kill or pass the bill? Talk about a situation.

Dick Morris was just on BOR and said it was a brilliant move by McCain. He said McCain will look like the knight on a white horse after he gets to D.C., gets the Repubs to go along with a plan, hold a press conference Friday afternoon setting out all that’s taking place and then announce that because everything’s under control he’ll be at the debate afterall, then he can show up at the debate and take credit for “saving the country.” I know Morris can be a little nutty, but I hope he’s right on this one. He also agrees that Obama’s “call me if you need me” line was a total bungle, but I think everybody on the planet knew that the minute they heard it.

Not more then 5 minutes ago Dick Morris said on O’Reilly that Rove probably orchestrated this whole thing referring to McCain suspending the campaign and heading to Washington.
AS BETWEEN THE TWO, debate and financial situation, i assure you the rank and file are MORE interested in the financial crisis. I’m an attorney, granted my colleagues are more interested in the financial situation than say, the support staff, but the debate? no one, save hard core political junkies are interested in the debate. If i overstated the interest in the financial situation, fine, that’s my experience, but no way the rank and file are interested in this debate, which was your contention.

People who have never before spoken to me about the economic situation or finances, have been talking about it and expressing concern this week. NOT A SOUL has said, gee, who ya think is gonna win the debate! LOL!
