McCain Suspends Campaign to Help With Bailout

John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

Largest Chevy dealership going under. That is just a sign of things to come and Obama thinks if he doesn’t go back to Washington that the country can blame Bush and he will stroll into white house. Obama does not care about us americans.... at all. ZERO ZERO ZERO!

I’m not being hysterical, but maybe McCain is. It’s going to look wimpy to most people. He tried to cancel the debate.

It will look wimpy to morons. Folks who watched McCain destroy Obama at Saddleback and folks who watched McCain offer to debate Obama in one townhall meeting per week, which Obama ran from like a scalded cat, will know the truth.

McCain will kick Obamas ass when they debate and McCain will be a player in solving the current "crisis". Obama will be boning up on the foreign policy that McCain already knows backwards and forwards.

There’s an old adage in politics: if you are not on offense, you are on defense.

Today McCain put BO on defense — yet again — and at worst neutralized a difficult issue.

And, perhaps most importantly, he forced BO into a verbal blunder that will haunt him: if you need me, call me.

Warren Buffet, an Obama supporter, called this problem a “financial Pearl Harbor.” Bambi thinks it’s more important to keep campaigning, and debate on foreign policy. And Bambi’s ignoring what’s going on in Washington is going to help him? Think again. McCain didn’t back out, he asked for a rescheduling of the debate so they could BOTH go to Washington to work on the problem. The difference between McCain and Obama is that McCain is willing to make the decision of country first, while Obama is more interested in pursuing a public office. He’s not even willing to do the job he was elected to do. Yeah, I know the $hit’s hitting the fan, but hey guys, I’ve got a campaign to run. If you need me, just give me a call.

How does postponing the debate help The One?

No debate = Obama doesn't have to stutter and stammer to come up with answers. He's a great speech giver, but start asking Obama questions and you get a lot of "uhhhhh".

The debates were McCain's chances to bury Obama. The fewer debates, the less McCain can do against the Obama spin machine.

Yep! He had to wait for Dean to get back ... Dean must be the guy who makes all of Obama's decisions.

There’s an old adage in politics: if you are not on offense, you are on defense.

The debates were McCain's chance to really go on the offensive, because Obama does a lousy job of coming up with answers ("UUUHHHH" is not an answer).

I stayed there when I was a kid. The tennis pro reamed my brother and me out for destroying the clay tennis courts with our basketball shoes.

Gee, sounds like Barry's kinda place.

I never said it wasn’t serious, I’m just saying that candidates have faced a lot tougher times and still found the time to debate, plus it looks like McCain didn’t have a clue of how serious it was if he waits until now to start “rolling up his sleeves”.

I’d hate to see a truly concerned person get banned just because they don’t agree on all points.

Agreed, no time for a purge.

Obama is clueless for putting it on the same level as the Great Depression and anybody who buys into Obama's beliefs is also clueless.

I have spent the last few days listening to the testimony of Paulsen, Bernancke, Cox, et. al. I have also heard other economists and financial experts comment on what is at stake. Obama is not the only one who has compared the potential results of this financial meltdown to the Great Depression. I am sure Bush will emphasize the severity of the crisis and the need to act urgently. Earlier on this thread I provided the shocked reactions of Dodd, Schumer and others when Paulson and the others briefed Congressional leaders on what was at stake.

Is the financial crisis severe? Yes, but we've known that for months (and in some cases years). If John McCain just realized that today, then he is even more clueless than Obama.

Like I said, you are clueless. Have you seen the huge flucuations and volatility in not only our stock market but the world's stock markets? This is not a US crisis, it is a global crisis that could very well spin out of control no matter what Congress does. Have you watched any of the hearings?

Like I said, what is John McCain going to do in the next two days to fix this, that President Bush, the Senate as a whole, the House of Representatives, and all of the government economists, can't do, and why can John McCain make time for the Clintons tonight, but not make time on Friday night for the debate?

It has to do with priorities. The administration has set a deadline to get some sort of package out before the markets open up on Monday. The credit crunch is already being felt in the housing market as capital dries up. Millions of americans depend on capital gains to provide them with retirement income. Less consumer confidence means less spending, which hurts business and results in job losses and the cycle is then repeated. You may not think this is serious, but there are plenty of much more knowledgeable people that do. I for one am very concerned both personally and for our nation. My parents went thru the Great Depression. No one escapes unscathed.
