Is Sleeping Apart Healthy for Marriage?
Pajamas Media ^ | September 22, 2008 | Helen Smith

Is sleeping alone a recipe for marriage success, disaster, or somewhere in between? I wondered about this after reading a recent article on the growing trend of married couples sleeping alone. Whether separate beds hurts a relationship depends on why the couple uses them...

Sleeping apart might be good for a marriage if your spouse is an early a.m. for work riser, smelly gas bag or a snorer.

Us too. My husband keeps farmers hours and I’m a night owl. I try not to work or watch tv late in the bedroom but if I’m up , sometimes he will go to sleep on the couch or in the guest bedroom. I crash where he is when I’m tired.

Ha - I’ve never had to do anything like that - my guy responds to a gentle nudge on his shoulder and a comment about turning over.

Do to my military status..I am a 9 hrs drive from my spouse. I get to vist her and the kids 4 days a month. No enough time for her to get mad at me and kick me out of bed. It does work....lol

Marriage is not a word. It’s a sentence....(a life sentence!).

Marriage is a 3-ring circus - engagement ring, wedding ring and Suffering.

A happy marriage is a matter of give and take; the husband gives and the wife takes.

A woman was telling her friend , “It was I who made my husband a millionaire.”
“And what was he before you married him?” asked the friend.
The woman replied, “ A multi-millionaire”.

There was this woman who had an artist paint a portrait of her covered with the most amazingly beautiful and expensive jewels.
Her explanation - “If I die and my husband re-marries, I want his next wife to go crazy looking for the jewels.”

20 plus years and we still have a double bed. I offered to buy a queen but my wife didn’t want it. I travel a little for work and have spent about 15 nights away camping this year.

I will usually wake up in the early morning hours, and once up, I don’t go back to bed. This might happen at 2 am or 4 am, but the only way I can get back to sleep is to turn on the news and hit the couch, so I get up and crash out there till it’s time to get up for good.

My husband and I usually ‘go’ to bed together and at the same time, I like to anyway. If I don’t go to bed when he does, I lose my chance; he’s snoring and a dog or two has taken my place, and I can’t disturb all that!

Why matters. If you aren’t sleeping together because you’re mad, that’s a lot different than just needing to sleep somewhere else for whatever reason.

He falsely claims I occasionally “snorkle”, which of course is a misconception on his part, which I will forgive him for eventually. ;^)

LOL - I'm the snorer in our bed. Mr. Inspectorette is such a quiet sleeper, I sometimes nudge him to make sure he's still alive!

Hell Yeah it’s good for a marriage! If we had to actually sleep in the same bed, we’d kill each other.

Now if we had to share separate office chairs we’d have a problem ;o)

Mine is similar to the comment "There’s a problem if only one partner likes sleeping with the dog, too."

Except...our dog (110 lbs) Clod Hopper, didn't like sleeping with me, he kept pushing me out of the bed, onto the tile floor. So when I inherited my grandmother's antique double bed, I put it in our room and I sleep in it. Hubby and the dogs sleep in the "their" bed, although we had to recently put a blanket on the floor for one of the dogs who has developed arthritis and has a hard time jumping up or down.

However, once we started sleeping in separate beds, it seemed we both slept better as we wouldn't wake each other up if we had to get out of bed at night, so we have just grown accustomed to it. Clod actually snores louder than either of us, LOL!

Same with us, only it's the kids instead of the dog.

My wife and I enjoy our king bed together. If I snore she wakes me. We both have difficulty sleeping apart from each other. It is comforting to know she is there.

Our bed dog is about 90 pounds. He sneaks up at night onto the foot of the bed and can roll up into a remarkably tight ball, you'd never notice him there. The problem is, he expands as he sleeps, like a glacier, taking up more and more room till I am getting pushed off the bed or have no covers. Heh... so I get up. Sheesh.

Optimal = Sleeping together
Less Optimal = sleeping apart
Unsustainable = not getting a good night sleep together.

Our bed dog is 86 pounds. She's our smallest and youngest dog. We've taught her not to “expand”, and she willingly gets up and moves if we ask her. Unfortunately, she sleeps in the middle of the bed, sometimes sharing our pillows. :)

Lost my wife almost seven years ago...I ever get another we are sleeping together...too much time, one third of one’s life, to ignore and not take advantage. One will regret not having the loved one with them. Sometimes its comforting when my daughter, dog and cat choose to sleep with me.
