Two advisers to John McCain's presidential campaign today said a flood of questionable voter registration applications in swing states threatens to undermine the accuracy of the November election and could prevent legitimate voters from registering for a ballot.
The warning came less than a week after the Democratic party filed a lawsuit in Michigan seeking to end what its lawyers said were Republican efforts to suppress votes of poor people and African Americans, two historically Democratic constituencies. The move indicates the Democratic and Republican parties are set to battle over voter registration in the remaining weeks of the campaign.
On a conference call with reporters this afternoon, former Republican senators John Danforth and Warren Rudman said a coalition of community organisations called Acorn had in several states submitted voter registration applications for people who were already registered.
The senators did not accuse the group of fraud, but suggested the group's registration drive was "diluting" legitimate votes and causing havoc in the nation's voter registration process.
"Our mission is to ensure that everybody who is entitled to vote gets to vote without any intimidation but also that there's no stuffing of the ballot boxes, no fraudulent voting and also that the rules are the same for everybody," said Danforth, a former Missouri senator.
"We are concerned that there is or may be a pattern of registering people who are not entitled to vote or otherwise gumming up the system for registering voters."
He cited news reports in Michigan, Colorado and elsewhere describing problematic registration applications surfacing after large Acorn registration drives. Earlier this month in Detroit, for example, the secretary of state's office cited a "sizeable number of duplicate and fraudulent applications" arising from an Acorn drive.

If they ain’t complaining, we ain’t working hard enough!
Danforth and Rudman???
ACORN is in the sights of the McCain camp - Ping.

I’m glad they’re making some noise about this. I was afraid McCain would try to be a “gentleman” about it, and we’re dealing with terrorists.
They need to know they are being watched.
It should be a felony for an organization to submit or conspire to submit voter registrations for people who do not meet eligibility requirements (which are easily tested).
Then again, it probably is, but because the Democrats always scream “racism” and “voter suppression” there haven’t been too many Republicans willing to spend the time, energy, and money to combat the smear campaign that would immediately begin.
All you need is to get the people registered (even multiple times). Then they can stuff the ballot box as needed. How do you prove if the same person voted twice? You check the records, but how do you prove it was that person and not someone else with a fake ID? Oh wait, you don’t need an ID in some states.
Then how do you challenge it even if 120% of registered voters vote? You can prove who voted for who. All you know is it was a rigged election with the Rats saying it was the republicans that were cheating and the republicans blaming the rats. The media won’t push it so it’s over.
If this happens like this we are screwed as a nation.
But are the Republicans signing up voters in Republican areas? Deadlines for registration will be coming up soon, if they have not already arrived in some states.
I hope the local organizations are just working quietly and efficiently to make sure we have enough GOP voters to offset all the deceased Obama supporters who will be voting in alphabetical order.
How do you prevent fraud? You volunteer as a Poll Challenger. See your state GOP folks for ways to get involved.
Mich now requires picture ID for voting.
This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it.
Or at least Benjaman Fanklin's Republic will be lucky to live throuh it.
Once the people, of any "side", lose faith in the integrity of the election process the country is one step from anarchy, which in turn is one step from tyranny.

Re: michigan photo ID
Is this new? Was this required in 2000 or 2004?
McCain should have been on this a long time ago. This the only way Republicans get beat in a close election... the Dem Vote Fraud Machine.
Need photo ID in VA, too .. tho ACORN has registered out-of-state college students, claiming their campus adddress is their permanent home.
Do you know what states DO require photo ID now ? I’m wishing we had the purple finger ID like they did in Iraq.

Yes, he spoke the words, but they were those of Tom Clancy's character Admiral Josh Painter. Thompson was after all, an actor, just like Ronald Reagan. A better one I'd say.
The biggest beneficiaries of Democrat fraud are RINOs. Without Democrat fraud, many RINOs would have no political reason to exist.
