McCain shakes off GOP's anti-immigration right [cold shoulder to Barletta of Hazleton]

SCRANTON, Pa. -- During the Republican primaries, John McCain delicately balanced his record of pushing for immigration reform with satisfying his party's new appetite for harsher restrictions. Now in a general election against an opponent who broadly shares his views on the issue, McCain is showing greater ease asserting his distance from the anti-immigration right.

the constitution party is irrelevant.
the stance of the constitution party is irrelevant.

right now we have to look at this long term.

The goal is to have more conservatives in office.
The goal is to feed more conservatives into UNelected positions.

Palin is a means to an end.

McCain is a drag on the ticket he has to be peter principled out of the way.

want to do something constructive? lets fire up the immigration amnesty anger and call mccain HQ and let him know his risks tossing us away.

I live about 40 miles from Oxford, maybe I could show up with a “McCain = Amnesty” sign. This lesser of two evils things is really bumming me out.

Put it this way, if you like extremists like Tancredo, you’ll fit right in at the CP.

Palin/Barletta in 2012. I will once again hold my nose and vote for McCain for this fact.

One thing you are is extremely cynical.

We adults call it being realistic.

(And, BTW, there's no Santa Claus.)

Why would you actively campaign for Obama here?

Please point out where I've said anyone should vote for Obama.

Can't do it? I didn't think so.

“This is something we have been aware of for some time, McCain’s views on immigration. It’s nothing new really. The Boston Globe is just trying to stir things up.”

McCain isn’t helping much!

“Yes that’s why he referred to it as a national security issue first. McCain said secure the borders first. If he reneges on that I’ll eat crow and admit I was wrong. But until then...”

If McCain is elected, are you going to stand with us against his legalization nonsense?

“D1,Your post reads like that of an unbeliever.

Totally discounting what the Lord is doing is not a path to success.”

Okay, that’s over the top. Are you trying to convince us McCain is “God’s will”?? And anyone who sees through him is an ‘unbeliever’? You’re better than that.

Take a look at what is happening now with the bailout. BLATANT socialism, and the GOP for the most part is meekly going along with it. WE will pay a TRILLION to increase the government’s share of control over the private sector, so we get screwed twice: once where they rob us, another as government closes its meaty hands tighter over the free market’s windpipe.

Bingo! With this government largesse of Wall Street, Bush et al. have brought more disrepute to capitalism than crazy old Karl Marx ever imagined in his wildest fantasies.

If we can steal from Main Street to save the priveleged asses of billionaire poverty pimps (remember that term?), who in the next administration will be able to effectively argue against expanding any government program? Socialism just snuck into the living room with no small thanks to the GOP.

(Poor Bush he dreamt of being the new Ronald Reagan but has ended as the new Jimmy Carter instead.)

McCain makes me want to throw up. I am voting for Palin.

Some may call me cynical, but it's only realistic for Americans to think in terms of "when McCain dies" instead of "if McCain dies". His age, his medical history are against him.

Plus, his mentally acuity is gone. A recent gaffe revealed he thought Spain was in the Western Hemisphere. On a good day he's firing on three cylinders.

If a very popular VP advocates a position which differs from that of a less-popular President, are the Republicans in Congress all going to support the latter? Or will they support the more popular person?

You mean what amounts effectively to an in-house coup d'etat? I don't see it happening.

Um, a majority of Spain is in the western hemisphere. Am I missing something?

No, Spain is in Europe. You need a new globe.

The Western Hemisphere is defined as the half of the earth west of the prime meridian (0 degrees longitude), right? The majority of Spain is west of the prime meridian, placing it in the western hemisphere.

I agree AuntB, and some of us have been telling folks this was on the radar and was going to come back to smack us right in the face. Haven’t we... ;-)

While I agree with you AuntB, I do understand where folks are coming from, who make this claim. They see Sarah as a great prospect for the future. I would like to think she will be too. It’s just that I know a lot of things can happen in the next four or eight years. While God does answer prayers, he can’t stop humans from being human. Unfortunately a lot of their free will is expended to support the unsupportable. Insert the name John McCain right here.
