(Al)Franken helps craft (Anti-)McCain 'SNL' skit

Al Franken, the former "Saturday Night Live" star now running in a high-profile Senate race in Minnesota, helped craft the opening sketch mocking John McCain that kicked off the NBC comedy show Saturday, according to two well-placed sources inside the network.

Franken, who hasn’t been a staff writer on the show for 13 years, “phoned in” a spoof of McCain recording campaign ads in an edit booth, said an NBC source. Seth Meyers, the show’s current head writer, wrote it, but the sketch was hatched by Franken, a longtime liberal satirist and comedian.

An SNL insider said that, as of the Wednesday script read-through, Franken was the “credited writer with Meyers” on the opening sketch. Show veteran Darrell Hammond is to play McCain.

Franken’s input to the show blindsided his campaign staff, who have been forced to explain away some of the more crass and profane parts of his past writing and acting that have been used as fodder against him in a state known for its polite manners.

A spokeswoman for Franken, Colleen Murray, first said the Democratic Senate candidate “didn’t write anything for SNL tonight.” But pressed if he was involved in the show or had been in contact with staff members, Murray admitted Franken had a role in Saturday's program.

This scetch is 4:42 long, and EXACTLY the same amount of time should be given to a REPUBLICAN written skit!

No, we don't need the Equal Time Law, that Ronald Reagan rescinded, to be put back in play again.

It's Al Franken...hardly a "star" when he was on SNL...he was 3ed tier.

Funny, I thought it was 5 minutes of dead air. Talk about wasting time...

Al better hope he wins the Senate race, becuase he obviously isn’t returning to comedy.

I don’t think Drudge was ever for Obama. I think it was more that he was against Hillary in the primaries. He’s been generally favorable toward Palin.

Al Franken needs to get into seriously deep compost for this. He tried to downply his role in the skit by saying he didn’t write it...which is true. He gave them the skit over the phone. But the reporter was one of those few with a functioning brain and asked flat out if he had had ANY role in it and he had to admit he did. Franken knows what he did was wrong. He is disgusting.

How about: ABC, NBC, CBS, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Obama campaign announced the plans for merger today. Senator Obama stated that the oversight of all things political and economic would be best served under “his” oversight...

We bought a brand new GE refrigerator and it needed repairs. It was impossible to get them to honor the warranty. Everytime I called the warranty department they would put me one hold for 2 hrs. until I got frustrated and hung up. IT WAS INFURIATING!! I decided then and there that I would never buy GE again!

I thought the McCain bit was heavy-handed, over-the-top and boring. Typical Franken fare.

The best skit of the night was buried, the NY Times/Alaska bit.

Al Franken, helped craft the opening sketch mocking John McCain...

this guarantees that it will not be funny...

I saw a few clips of the previews. You are right - not funny at all. If funny was c*@p, those didn't even emit a smell.

This kind of thing has been going on for decades.

I'm old enough to remember the Smothers Brothers and Laugh-In, when political satire was at its height. Republicans, and any other political figures who took themselves seriously and were in power, were always their favorite fodder -- especially during elections.

Well, true, Drudge certainly had good reason to hate and fear hillary. He was lucky not to have ended up in Fort Marcy Park the first time around.

Send a couple of DEA agents in there and the show would be shut down for good.

Because it was too true.
