(CBS) Both presidential candidates agree the nation is in a recession. Democratic Sen. Barack Obama and Republican Sen. John McCain, appearing in separate interviews for a special 40th anniversary edition of 60 Minutes, say the economic term applies to the current troubles and lay out their plans to solve the situation if they are elected.
Their interviews will be broadcast this Sunday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
"Oh, I think there's no doubt that when the numbers come out, that we are officially in recession," Obama tells Steve Kroft. "I think, for a lot of people, they've been feeling like we've been in a recession for years now. When their wages and incomes don't go up, and the cost of gas and groceries and home heating oil and prescription drugs are all going up, that feels awfully like a recession to them," says Obama.
Scott Pelley asks McCain whether he thinks the country is in a recession. "Sure. [but] technically, I don't know Americans today don't care about what the, quote, 'technical term' is," says McCain. "Unemployment is up. Wages are down. Home foreclosures are incredibly high, the worst in many, many, many years. All of the indicators that affect the American family, unemployment being up - those people, they don't care whether technically we're in a recession or not. Fact is they're hurting and they are hurting very, very badly," he says.
The candidates were interviewed within a 24 hour period, Obama in Nevada this past Wednesday, and McCain in Wisconsin on Thursday afternoon . Their interviews will fill the entire broadcast Sunday, providing viewers a revealing side-by-side look at the candidates and their positions before their first debate on Friday, Sept. 26.
I guess the definition of recession has changed.
Oh? And just what are the "official numbers" that define and "official recession", Barry?
They’re both dead wrong.

You don’t think Hussein would know, do ya??? (/s)
McCain had a decent answer, if only he hadn’t said “Sure”.
I saw it. McCain sounded fantastic. He is really very impressive one-on-one...so much better than on the stump.

He is still eager to please the MSM, they all are.
It is a horrible, horrible, horrible, deadly, habit.
He didn’s say “sure” as in “of course.” He said “sure” as in, sure, I understand what you’re asking. Really. It was a different tone entirely.
Heh, heh. Naaah. And I really didn't expect Steve Kroft to nail him down on it. I must've been posting in my sleep.
McCain doesn't want to be accused of being insensitive. And Obama loves to lie about the economy, like many Dems, for political gain.
Yes, I liked how McCain said we need to keep taxes low and slash the federal government all around. He even said we could cut the excesses in the military.
McCain sounded very centrist and as exciting as dishwater. This equivocation of equally blaming Bush and “congress”, not the democrats, especially Obama’s buddies Raines and Johnson for this financial debacle, is just weak. He looks old in this interview. Obama and his empty talk, looks invigorated. The McCain campaign needs to crush this guy and stop with all this bipartisan lame talk.
Lead, Senator McCain!!!

Kroft pressed Barack the Unabama on what makes him qualified to be President. Kroft told Barack he’s never run anything, so how will it be on the first day if he’s president.
I don’t think anyone in the MSM has ever asked this of obama.
I’d be more impressed by these supposed dogged interviewers for “60 Minutes” if they’d actually ask some tough questions.
You know, like “Senator Obama, you received the second most contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Why did they give you the money and what did they expect you to do in exchange for it? And please answer the question rather than changing the topic to John McCain or George W. Bush”.
Wrong! When McCain attacked both Bush and the Congress on the mismanagement of the financial debacle, he specifically said that the Dems have controlled congress for the last two years. So he did pin the blame on both Bush and the Democrats.
The brilliant Ethanol from Corn move was a clincher. It drove the market.
Had they said we could drill or use other assets 10 years ago....we'd never be in this mess. They made us dependent....and there's no short term correction.
