PULLED IN TWO DIRECTIONS Our Daily Bread ~ July 29, 1998
Read: Philippians 1:19-26
"To me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. ... I am hard pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ. (Philippians 1:21,23)
As Christians, we are pulled in two directions. We all want to go to heaven, but this life also holds great appeal. We are like the youngster in Sunday school who listened intently while the teacher told about the beauties of heaven. She concluded by saying, "Raise your hand if you want to go to heaven." Every hand shot up immediately--except one. "Why don't you want to go to heaven, Johnny?" "Well," he replied, "Mom just baked an apple pie for dinner."
Now, we don't need to feel guilty for having a strong desire to enjoy life. Marriage, a family, a fulfilling job, travel, recreation--these all have a legitimate appeal. But if the delights of our earthly home are so attractive that we lose sight of God's purpose for putting us here, something's wrong.
The apostle Paul had mixed feelings too. Although he believed he would be released from prison, he knew that he could possibly fall victim to Nero's sword. This created a conflict. He longed to be with Christ, for that would be "far better" (Philippians 1:23). He also wanted to live--not merely to enjoy life but because he was needed by his fellow believers (v.24).
Paul was pulled in two directions, and in both cases it was for the highest reason. What about us? --DJD

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier or National Guardsman
Feel alone or forgotten.
In Your Holy Name, Amen!
Dear God, help me to walk with
you all through today.
Give me today
something of the wisdom that was in your words.
something of the love that was in your heart.
something of the help that was in your hands.
Give me today
something of your patience with people,
something of your ability to bear slights and insults and bitterness
without resentment,
something of your ability to forgive.
Help me to live in such a way today that others may know that I began
the day with you, and that I am walking with you, however dimly, others
may see you in me. Amen.

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.
May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.
May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.
G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

Rightly Dividing The Word
Be diligent . . . rightly dividing the Word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15
In 1879, James Murray was hired as the editor of The Oxford English Dictionary. He had little advanced education, but he was a gifted linguist. Murray enlisted a large number of volunteers around the world to read widely and send him usages of assigned words. At Oxford, he and a small staff of scholars cataloged and edited the definitions they received.
During his lifetime, Murray was knighted and awarded an honorary doctorate from Oxford. Today, the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary is still recognized as one of the most accurate and comprehensive dictionaries in the world.
Murrays legacy of precision and accuracy with words reminds me of what the apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, a young pastor of the Ephesian church: Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth (2 Tim. 2:15). The phrase rightly dividing is a metaphor derived from the stonemasons craft of cutting stones straight to fit into their proper place in a building.
Precision with words is essential to an accurate interpretation of Gods Word. Lets be people who care deeply about what the Bible says and what it means.
Correctly handling the Word of truth
Takes diligence and care;
So make the time to study it
And then that truth declare. Hess
Rightly dividing the Word multiplies our understanding.
