Fox News recently picked up on a piece by the National Post’s Jonathan Kay which takes on the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) because one of its columnists, Heather Mallick, recently included incendiary comments in her September 5 column, on CBC's Web site, "A Mighty Wind blows through Republican convention," about Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, contending that Palin has the "toned-down version of the porn actress look," and attacking people in small towns as she charged that Palin "added nothing to the ticket that the Republicans didn't already have sewn up, the white trash vote, the demographic that sullies America's name inside and outside its borders yet has such a curious appeal for the right."

Which is why I soon plan to move from the city I was born in to a small town.

And I guarantee I will not miss living in a city.

I think it is closer to: single people leave small towns to find mates, then they flee urban blight to raise families in suburbia or small towns where life is much better. You can get all the intellect you need over the net now.

I didn't start living until I quit my big job in a big city with big responsibilities, big hours, high pressure and no real life and moved to a small town. I kinda like normal people as neighbors, time to do all the little things, time to enjoy walking in safety, not hearing sirens at all hours, sometimes gunshots, lack of homeless every 10 feet not asking but demanding a handout. I enjoy being able to park my vehicle almost anywhere when shopping and knowing the store clerks name and he or she mine. I have time for sincere interaction with people without being on guard for traps, agendas and trickery. There is no comparison and for sure the headline should read "Smart people flee big cities" The democrats deserve the big cities they've created for themselves. I'll take my small town and hopefully they won't ever come out this way. We're happy as we can be without them.

I like your your way of putting it... and so true it is. I personally prefer a small town to a city (big or small).... but I don't have much an option here (Japan).. They call them 'different' city names, but they are all one huge city here. There is nothing separating the cities here except border markings on a map :p (and that is no exaggeration!

I can understand that is the case considering the small land mass of Japan. I was just a child when I lived on an Island in Japan that had the small town atmosphere way back in 1949,50 & 51. We lived on Eta Jima off the mainland. Closest city was Kure and we had to boat to and from Kure but Eta Jima was wonderful and my early exposure to a small town atmosphere both the village itself and our military camp small town atmosphere also.

Didn't work that way for me. Although I was born and raised in Dallas, I went to junior high and high school in a small East Texas city, and you can best believe I got the hell out as quickly as I could. Everyone with any kind of dream or desire to live in the real world did. That town was a stultifying, uncultured, mind-numbing hive of small-minded, materialistic peckerwoods with no ambition beyond getting a lifetime job on the line at the pipe plant or at the "tar facktry". Brrrrr.

And suburbia? A totally artificial environment, where isolation from humanity is the goal, a theme park for autostic living built on the scale of cars instead of people? Nein danke.

Give me the city. The city — civitas — is the foundation of civilization. It is where art, commerce, and the exchange of ideas happens. Those who enjoy life among the bugs, reptiles, beady-eyed hillbillies, and bored, tweaked-out, alienated teenagers that populate farm and fringe are of course welcome to their own ways of life — but it's not for me.

As one who populates a small corner of farm and fringe, I appreciated your post, and I do understand your point. But where we've got our bugs, reptiles, and beady-eyed hillbillies, you've got your rodents, pigeons, and crack-heads. As for our hillbillies, they are distinctly ours. As for alienated teenagers, call it a wash. Part of the attraction for me is the degree to which we are immersed fully into the community in which we live. It seems to me that a city allows for its citizens to isolate themselves from those they differ from, simply by virtue of the number of individuals to choose from. Out here your neighbors are those you must depend on, and whom are dependent upon you. There is, I think, a deeper sense of community when they are more like family, by which I mean they are forced upon you, you are forced upon them, and we are forced of necessity to make do.
