About 50 to 80 Muslims quit at the JBS Swift & Co. meatpacking plant Thursday night.
Dan Hoppes, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local No. 22, said the matter stems from the recent debate over break time for the purpose of prayer during the holy month of Ramadan.
"There were some Muslim people who wanted to get the rest of the people to back them to moving their (dinner) break to an earlier time, and when that did not happen, the rest of the people went back to work and those people protesting got loud and boisterous. It wasn't a physical altercation at all," Hoppes said.
But there was fear that it might get physical, so the police were called into the Swift plant about 9 p.m.
"By the time the police got there, it was settled down, and several of them went ahead and quit or left the plant," Hoppes said. "They were told either go back to work or leave.
"Some of them chose to leave -- to quit," Hoppes said.
The workers who quit were from B shift -- the evening shift that typically works from 3 to 11:30 p.m.
About 500 Somalian workers had staged a similar prayer protest on Monday and Tuesday. An earlier dinner break time was negotiated with the Muslims, Swift and the union, but that was then rescinded after the majority of other Swift workers counterprotested on Wednesday and Thursday.
Things seemed to be back to normal at the plant today, Hoppes said.
"The morning shift started (Friday) morning -- I think they are full, and the B shift, if they are short that many people, it will be a little slower, but they are planning (to run) just like regular," he said.
A call to Swift's corporate headquarters in Greeley, Colo., was not returned.
I don’t care what problems either racial/ethnic/religious groups have. I don’t want ANY of them making food that I might buy in a grocery store. I’ll look twice at the labels on who makes the food I pick up from now on.

Those that quit will probably lawyer up or go to Tennessee and join their Muslim brothers at the Tyson plant.

Besides the low pay, long hours and no benefits, an important reason employers like using illegals: if they `squawk’, they walk. They hold their status over their heads.
(Who knows? Mebbe supervisors call ICE when a group of illegals `get too big for their britches’; seen many employers getting rousted?)
They quit and already came back this week. Did they quit again AFTER coming back?

So the line would have fewer people while some were on break? Or would the whole line have to eat earlier?
Now they get it! This is the United States of America.
If they want break time for Muslim prayer it's the convention in cesspools ruled by shari'a. Go there.
Corporate socialism (in the name of political correctness) is killing American business.
We have a large Somali population nearby us. I generally concur with your observation. I am also glad that Swift did what was right by the entire work force, not just a few. The few did not like the rules and they quit. Not a big deal. If you don't like your current situation, then look for something better. That is what makes a free market work.
Why haven't they moved operations to China?

We are seeing the net results of several years of unchecked multi-culturismn at work these days and it is going to only worsen beyond our wildest dreams or better yet, fears if allowed to continue unabated.
