The campaign puts out a statement from former Fannie Mae chief Franklin Raines, disowning ties to Obama, after a McCain ad attacked him for the ties.
The Washington Post reported -- with the kind of blind sourcing that suggests the source was Raines -- that Raines had "taken calls from Barack Obama's presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage and housing policy matters."
Raines said in the statement through the campaign, "I am not an advisor to Barack Obama, nor have I provided his campaign with advice on housing or economic matters."
Obama spokesman Bill Burton added an attack:
This is another flat-out lie from a dishonorable campaign that is increasingly incapable of telling the truth. Frank Raines has never advised Senator Obama about anything -- ever. And by the way, someone whose campaign manager and top advisor worked and lobbied for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac shouldn't be throwing stones from his seven glass houses.
UPDATE: McCain spokesman Brian Rogers notes that Obama didn't contradict the claim when it first appeared in the Post.

Former Fannie chief agrees to $24.7 million settlementWASHINGTON Former Fannie Mae chief Franklin Raines and two other top executives have agreed to a $31.4 million settlement with the government announced Friday over their roles in a 2004 accounting scandal.
Raines, former Fannie chief financial officer Timothy Howard and former controller Leanne Spencer were accused in a civil lawsuit in December 2006 with manipulating earnings over a six-year period at the company, the largest U.S. financer and guarantor of home mortgages.
Raines, a prominent Washington figure who was President Clinton's budget director, is relinquishing company stock options, proceeds from stock sales and other benefits. His part of the settlement is worth $24.7 million,
i'm sure it's all true... Obama also denied being mentored by Jeremiah Wright... and denied ever hearing his hateful sermons... he has no problem with flat-out lying...
Fannie, Freddie spent millions on lobbyingRaines, the company's former chief financial officer, Timothy Howard, and former controller Leanne Spencer were accused in a civil lawsuit of manipulating earnings over a six-year period at Fannie. Raines was appointed by Clinton, after serving as White House budget director under Clinton.
Raines' predecessor, former Fannie Mae chief James Johnson, is a prominent Democrat who was an adviser to 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry and was selected by Obama to help vet his vice presidential prospects. But controversy over favorable loan deals he obtained with Countrywide Financial Corp., a bank seriously damaged by the mortgage meltdown decline, prompted him to abruptly resign that post in June.

Yes, that really gives one the shudders. What terrifies, however, is to watch his surrogates, people like Alan Colmes, sit there and essentially say, "So, what?" night after night.
all that’s great-but Bush has not\will not take on the enemy within-the marxists in Congress. While the threat of Islamic terrorism is real and I applaud his efforts to purse it, it is no more dangerous than the destruction of our economy and way of life by the liberals in Congress. By prohibiting oil drilling, the use of nuclear power and clean coal technology they are DELIBERATLY trying to cripple this country and our economy in order to win the election in November. They need to be confronted and defeated.
If he keep throwing people under the bus, the bus is gonna have to be fitted with a lift kit!

“On July 16, 2008, The Washington Post reported that Franklin Raines had “taken calls from Barack Obama’s presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage and housing policy matters.” [7]. Also, in an editorial in August 27, 2008 titled “Tough Decision Coming”, the Washington Post editorial staff claimed that “Two members of Mr. Obama’s political circle, James A. Johnson and Franklin D. Raines, are former chief executives of Fannie Mae.” [8]
On September 18, 2008 John McCain’s Campaign, in an ad critical of Obama, quoted the Washington Post to claim that Franklin Raines advises Barack Obama on economic matters. Both Raines and the Obama Campaign claim that Raines is not an Obama advisor and has never advised Senator Obama.”
I am saving this since Dems likely can’t destroy all copies of the Washington Compost.
Wont work and I doubt itll shift the polls, period. The only media who will pick this up will be Fox and talk radio. Its a different set of rules for republicans.
Nope. Wait ‘til Rush’s millions find out about this tomorrow. Rush is not just “talk radio” anymore. Besides, with both Bush and McCain on hard record having expressed their concerns about the Fannies long ago, and the Dems on hard record blocking their efforts to get some accountability, this is a win/win/win for the GOP.

I not only hope I’m WRONG on this and you are RIGHT, I’m praying for it. LOL. When I get pessimistic, it’s absolutely fabulous to find a conservative, who in disagreeing, provides a moral boost. Thanks, JennysCool.
Thats not the Frank Raines that Obama knew.... heck no.. Americans that vote for Obama are clueless just like he is and if Obama becomes the president and we are all insoup lines thank a Liberal.
The denial makes this the FOCUS.
Now, the economic crisis is LINKED to Obama.
Thank you, Al Gore, for inventing the internet....
Bingo. As I watch Onada make one blunder after another I’m beginning to think that God truly does love conservatives. Can you imagine the MSM frenzy if McCain/Palin had goofed only once? Onada shoots himself in the foot every day and the MSM cover for him.
