McCain goes on offense, links Obama to credit crisis
hotair.com ^ | September 18, 2008 | Ed Morrissey

John McCain shifted gears in Iowa today and reminded voters in Cedar Rapids that he predicted the outcome of the credit crisis two years ago, and few bothered to act. McCain also aggressively painted Barack Obama as a prime example of do-nothing politicians co-opted by lobbyist money. His speech pointed out the amount of money Obama has received from Fannie/Freddie donors and the advisers he uses that helped create the crisis (emphases mine):

Senator Obama talks a tough game on the financial markets but the facts tell a different story. He took more money from Fannie and Freddie than any Senator but the Democratic chairman of the committee that regulates them. He put Fannie Mae’s CEO who helped create this disaster in charge of finding his Vice President. Fannie’s former General Counsel is a senior advisor to his campaign. Whose side do you think he is on? When I pushed legislation to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Senator Obama was silent. He didn’t lift a hand to avert this crisis. While the leaders of Fannie and Freddie were lining the pockets of his campaign, they were sowing the seeds of the financial crisis we see today and enriching themselves with millions of dollars in payments. That’s not change, that’s what’s broken in Washington.

I heard that AIG will be paying back the “loan”, but paying back to whom? Not the taxpayer who footed the “loan”! So the gubmint will sop up a zillion “if” it is, indeed, paid back.

If he keeps pushing hard on this & BHO record on the WOT McCain will win big!

McCain’s responses to this problem were so much more mature, thoughtful and presidential.

Yes, and don’t just use the ad on the internet....blast it from coast to coast during primetime. Use whatever money is necessary to get this message out — it is imperative, and will sink the skunk.

Some people can’t be pleased. If he jumps into say something that looks stupid, we hear “it’s over”. If he refutes things after he makes sure all his ducks are in a row, he is criticized. Liberals are not much harder on McCain.

If not, why not?

Is that a rhetorical question, or are you serious?

This needs to be more than a section of a speech in Iowa. It needs to be an official ad bombarding the airwaves.

That’s not change, that’s what’s broken in Washington.

Som McCain finally goes on the attack and points finger and names names.

But, he ends with that pathetic statement above? That's a Washington talking point which is often used by people from all political political persuasions.

We have known that a lot of the problems with our economy stem from government corruption or government control or regulations which very often make matters worse. So, why that weak statement?

Why not, something that bites harder, like:

The people in the inner circle of the Obama campaign are directly responsible for the Freddie and Fannie failures. If Obama's judgment is that that kind of people are who are going to help solve our problems, then Obama himself is part of the problem. It's people like Obama that created the mess with Freddie and Fannie and most of what ails our economy. If we are going to get this country right again, then we absolutely cannot afford someone like Obama leading us to more and bigger failure.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Unfortunately, term limits would require a constitutional amendment, and the professional pols of both parties in DC will never craft one and send it to the states for ratification. Term limits were a plank in the Contract With America in 1994. They went nowhere even in that new, fresh Republican congress. They have zero chance now or in the foreseeable future.

Quote: “Someone was just asking for this on another thread this morning.”

I think alot of people were, but I was amongst them. I proposed McCain run an ad like this:

Open with the “Obama, Obama” chants.

Barak Obama says that he was responible for passing the recent economic stimulus bill. But Barak Obama knows he wasn’t and, like his term in the Illinois State Legislature, he could not even be bothered to show up to vote on the stimulus package he now claims to have sponsored.

John McCain warned about the collapse of mortgage lenders Fannie May and Freddie Mac and demanded reform. While John McCain was busy trying to reform these collapsing institutions, Barak Obama was too busy running for President. Barak Obama has even hired the ethically challenged former head of Fannie May as one of his closest economic advisors.

Can we really afford to take a chance on Barak Obama? In these times we need the proven experience and determination of John McCain.

I’m John McCain and I approved this message.

Why should I be be bailing out a zillion dollar company?

Unless you mailed a check to AIG, you're not bailing them out.

Limbaugh was right when he said today that McCain/Palin should not be competing with Obama with attacks on Wall Street and Fannie & Freddie. Instead the focus should be going after Obama and his close ties with these CEO’s. This video is what they need to get that started.

Bambi is going to get rolled like a clown in the debates. McCain is not a great orator but he knows how to brawl and Bambi has no chin.

What a total poser Krugman is! Good Lord. This is on his NYTimes “blog” today. He states that t-bills were worse than in The Great Depression, then corrects himself a moment later. What a doofus. (With apologies to everyday doofuses out there!)

“Interest rates on Treasury bills this morning: incredibly low on one-month, negative on three-month bills. This didn’t even happen in the Great Depression.

Professionally, I’m fascinated. As a citizen, I’m terrified.”

“Correction: That wasn’t a negative rate this morning, red color notwithstanding. But it was briefly negative yesterday.”

Lord help us if Obama is elected and THIS Ivy-League moron is one of his advisers! Eeeeeeeek! LOL!

Why should I be be bailing out a zillion dollar company?

Why should I bail out your investments, retirement funds etc?

Are you going to bail out the tens of thousands facing foreclosures?

Are you going to bail me out if I make an investment that goes belly up?

If not, why not?

Unless you mailed a check to AIG, you're not bailing them out.

Oh, I see Todd. So unless Americans send a separate check to the U.S. Gov for every tax that is confiscated, this means were really not paying?

lol...

Come on Todd, you can defend this monster Fedgov and socialism better than that.
