I agree. Duplicate threads are out of control now. The search function was better before it defaulted to keyword searching. Maybe a forced “search for existing threads” when posting a new topic would help.

I vote that we do another study to examine whether or not this study was studied sufficiently enough to warrant a post regarding studies that studied the habits of FR posters.
I’ll be in my study.

The current FR search, when it does work, is still worse than the old FR search, which was bad.
If John would spend as much time working on a decent search capability, as he did screwing up the fonts during the last ‘upgrade’, we might have a decent search.
Alas, we still don’t. Even though search and post editing have been ‘most requested’ features for years.
[I use Google with site:freerepublic.com as the delimiter. It works.]

Use Google to search threads and topics on FR, it is very effective.

Yes, that type of automated search is possible, and not difficult. A better search might be for the URL, though, just in case the title has been modified.
Manual searches are often ineffective, especially on “hot” articles, because all five of the duplicates are frequently posted within minutes of each other, and none of them would have appeared in search results prior posting any of them. Often, the time difference is only the difference in typing speed between the posters.

The problem arises when the first couple of posters don’t use the proper keywords (or don’t use them at all) when posting. Then, someone who knows how to do it properly comes along, does a search, gets no results, and does a double post.
People who change article titles when posting cause this to happen, too.
I speak from experience.

FR’s search functions suck.
Big Time.
Anyone besides me know why there are so many “Who Am I?” threads posted recently?
Is it because so many FReepers don’t know how to use search?
To: Joe Brower
LOL I’ve used that line many many times (each with a different % value)
